PAC-JMM rivalry: Double standard

I think all this is partly because of "packaging" and "brand recognition".

On one hand, Mexican fighters have good reputations and pedigree. They come from a long line of ATG and legends, and they have the Mexican warrior mystique. Most of them have that Latino machismo and lovable arrogance that boxing fans just love. A lot of them also look the part of a Latino warrior. Square jawed, a hard, masculine face, a tough, macho aura, and a lean and mean body. And when they are interviewed, they speak in spanish and they sound very cool doing that.

It's really hard not to root for them.

Asian or Filipino boxers, on the other hand, they are a bit of a mystery, especially to western boxing fans. They dont see a lot of our people fighting in the west, especially before Manny became famous. They've only read of asian legends like Elorde, Harada, Galaxy, etc. and they only see asian fighters every once in a while. A Korean here and there, a Japanese or a Thai, sometimes a Filipino. Not a whole lot. You have to build the asian fanbase from scratch, everytime you introduce an asian fighter to the west.

And Manny doesnt really have the look of a boxing warrior, outside the ring. He sings, he acts, he plays the guitar (badly, yes I know :yep) he smiles a lot, he laughs a lot, he's very respectful towards his opponents, he speaks broken but passable English during interviews and he looks like a harmless 15 year old asian exchange student.

He doesnt look the part of a boxing warrior. You only see how mean he is when he fights on top of the ring.

I compare it to grocery shopping. You see 2 different brands of corn flakes/cereal. One's a famous brand, the other one a newer brand. Both are of the same quality and price.

I bet you most people will pick the more famous brand and the one they've been using all their lives. It just feels right.

 

They see Manny Pacquiao ridin' they hating...

 

Who cares. :tired Pac can keep on racking great wins and his haters can go cry about it until the next Ice Age.

I agree though that both are a rare breed of lower weight fighters that comes along only once so often and true boxing fans should be glad that we have them today to experience their amazing career runs.

When some people feel their favorite fighter is severely overwhelmed in comparison to another fighter, it is the natural tendency to overrate their boy's accomplishments and also understate the other fighter's.

That's just how the f*ckin' cookie crumbles.

The Dela Hoya victory is by far the trump card, and Marquez does not look likely to get anywhere near surpassing it. It seems for all the "big" fights Marquez has fought he has only made seven figures only once, and that was in the PacMan rematch. Financially and legacy-wise, another Pacquiao fight is the only big ticket for Juan.

In contrast, PacMan has bigger options financially and legacy-wise as well. While I personally would like to see Pacquiao-Marquez III, there's even better options beyond Hatton for Pacquiao. Arum has floated the names of Cotto, maybe Mosley and while right now the Floyd fight is being downplayed to dampen Marquez' efforts at getting his name discussed in boxing circles, these names are certainly bigger in terms of both legacy AND payday than Marquez.
