Apparently Schaefer is adamant that Canelo can make 147, even though he was nearly 152 for Hatton.

They are considering throwing Ortiz into the mix.....

Not much of a concession though is it?

Pacquiao's always in the 144 range anyway.... still if it gets the fight made then that's great news.

Would be better at lightweight which Pac probably can't make anymore. Even at that weight though JMM would get robbed again!

I hope Schaefer doesn't torpedo this with an Ortiz fight. The way Ortiz has filled out at Welter he would look like a giant against Marquez.

I'd imagine that Marquez vs Ortiz would sell better than Marquez vs Alvarez to be honest..... alright it's not an all-Mexican contest but at least Ortiz is a real champion and has been on HBO before.

Nobody in their right minds would want Marquez vs Alvarez, he's ****ing huge, I'd reckon he wasn't far off 170 against Hatton on the night..... against a ~145lb Marquez it would be a freakshow.

Then again, Ortiz was at 161 for Berto.... but he wanted that fight at 143 so I'd assume he can make it.

I wonder if Arum would turn round and just reduce the weight - it's a fight he seems keen on at the moment.....

One thing he's got in his favour is the overall package, a $5m guarantee plus an upside, tied to a minimum $10m rematch clause if Marquez wins.

There's no fighter in the world that can generate those sort of numbers for JMM other than Pacquiao.

I'm so excited at the prospect of this, I've always been sceptical of a third actually coming off.

Yeah me too..... ideally it'd have happened immediately after the 2nd fight but at least it's seemingly here now.

It's strange how the tables have turned that it's GBP who are more likely to throw a spanner in the works.... and Arum wants it now. At the time I recall Arum saying there would be a 3rd fight at some stage but to let it simmer for a bit.

I guess he wasn't expecting Pacquiao to whack all his welterweights something rotten.... the Cotto performance was a masterpiece, the others have all been a bit off since, as if he wasn't really up for it.

To be honest I thought it was gone when JMM lost to Floyd, but the one-sided wins over Diaz and Katsidis have brought him right back in.

Add all these things to Floyd's continuing absence, and lots of decent but non-star names in the 135-147 divisions and it makes sense for all parties.

    Especially the fans :yep

There have been rumors about Golden Boy being in bad debt (spread by Arum mind you:yep).
If they try and match this offer with Alvarez or Ortiz they must be out their minds. :nut
Good on JMM for getting the fight:good

What do you reckon to those?

They've been getting preferential treatment from HBO since they started out.... but their business model seems to be flawed, though that's only really been noticeable since Arum stopped working with them and they've been on their own.

Instead of signing up fighters in a particular weight bracket (say 135-147 or 160-175) they just sign big names from other promoters.... and overpay quite a lot of fighters too.

So they're stuck with just a couple of fighters in those weights, and either have to match them or get some catchweight contests going on.... or rely on Sillyman to do his work with the rankings.

They would probably have been better off competing on a level playing field, making them get their business in order first.

Pac would make 140 with ease, roach knows the heavier Marquez the easier pac will destroy him, which imo he will

Anyone else reckon this could be a hard fight to promote though? people who haven't seen the 2 previous fights will be looking at this and thinking why pay HBO PPV to see Pac beat a guy he's already beaten twice?

Personally I can't wait and the only 2 other fighters I would have in JMM's place if I could would be Floyd or Martinez, but just wondering how it will come across to mainstrean viewers.

    Hmm..... I'd buy :hey

To be fair I still don't think Martinez is that big a name.... outside of Pacquiao though there ain't a right lot, Marquez is probably the biggest active name apart from him.

After getting completely schooled and embarrassed by Mayweather I'm not sure why anyone would want to see Marquez compete with an elite opponent at welterweight again.

144 is fair enough. weight makes little difference in this fight to be honest they will both be around 144 in the ring even if it was at 135
