Pacquiao weighed more than that in the ring when he fought him at super featherweight. He will come in around 149.
Beaten once To your point, well not really, should be easy enough to promote. Marquez is the last guy who's really pushed Manny to the wire, and their record is one draw and one razor thin win for Pacman. And JMM is the current king of the LW division, I think it's very sellable. Plus there's the mexican element. While Marquez isn't the most popular Mexican fighter around, I'll bet he'll pull a lot more support from them for this fight.
You would think Marquez would take a summer fight against Judah to prepare himself for a bigger, fast southpaw instead of fighting a bum like David Diaz. Just protecting his big pay day from a slip up would be my guess.
Top Rank's CEO, Bob Arum, says HBO will not financially assist Golden Boy Promotions with putting together a fight between Juan Manuel Marquez and WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz. Golden Boy's CEO, Richard Schaefer, was quoted by the Los Angeles Times as stating that"HBO would be on board" to help finance Ortiz-Marquez. Ortiz is one possibility for Golden Boy to match a revised offer that Marquez received to face Manny Pacquiao in a trilogy bout on November 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The offer for Pacquiao includes a $5 million dollar guarantee with a pay-per-view upside, a rematch clause with a $10 million dollar guarantee, and a catch-weight of 144-pounds. Pursuant to an expired promotional agreement, Marquez must provide Golden Boy with the opportunity to match Top Rank's offer. Schaefer was previously planning to offer Marquez a fight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, but Top Rank's revised offer, with the catch-weight of 144, rules Alvarez out. According to Arum, HBO reached out to advise him of their position with respect to Schaefer's comments to The Times. "When Richard said that HBO was going to finance him and so forth, that's just not true. You can check with HBO. They are not going to finance the Marquez-Ortiz fight. That's just not true. I got calls from HBO saying categorically that wasn't true," Arum said. :happy
Marquez vs Canelo or Ortiz does not make sense. JMM vs Pac makes sense because of the history, the fact Pac is small and the fact he'll give up weight. Otherwise Marquez should pursure Khan at 140 for the WBA.
http://www.boxing-scene.com/pacquiaos-adviser-talks-marquez-trilogy-steroid-claims--39254 Remove the - from the middle and there's a little interview with that flunky of Pacquiao's. Apparently not keen on this fight, probably because it's not a walkover.
Golden Boy had a deadline of yesterday to match the TR offer. Marquez is in LA meeting with Top Rank today and will probably sign the contract :happy *This comes from Lance Pugmire of the LA Times.
good news, unfinished business, weight cant be no excuse either, marquez wieghs 144 on the night of his fights now. pac will be probably 144 dead on for weigh in and be 146 for the fight,a bit lighter than usual for tht bit more speed. im not sure marquez has improved as a fighter since fighting pacman last,we know pac has improved a fair bit since though. Pac's power will be better, and marquez has been put down by katsidis, and drawn into a war with diaz also.
:happy They had no chance of matching a $5m guarantee with who they had available..... then the $10m minimum for a rematch just pissed all over GBP. Were they 1 & 2? :think
I have JMM no.2....oh, yeah, The Rings ratings have gone to shite. HitmanHatton, I will put B-Hop right near the top if he wins on Saturday. But the Jones rematch and a close fight with Pascal (I felt B-Hop won mind you) does not see him leapfrog Marquez on recent form IMO: Since Pac, Marquez has been on a consistent run. In the last year, wins over Diaz and Katsidis have kept him in there, not seeing him go down, but not seeing him set the World alight either. Donaire and Martinez both have had a good 12 months, but Marquez is still no.2 for me :good
