Now that its official that the fight isn`t going to happen, where does the blame lie for it falling thru in your opinion? I`ll start off by laying it squarely at the feet of Mayweather and his camp, their refusal to lay off the olympic style blood testing days before the fight was supposed to take place scuttled what would have been the mega-fight of our era. And my guess is that that is exactly what Mayweather and his camp wanted as in my honest opinion they didnt really want the fight, so I think they came up with the blood testing issue as a way to try and paint Pacquiao as the bad guy and possible cheat with something to hide. Its a brilliant strategy really because that way Mayweather can walk away from the fight and keep his oh so important undefeated record and look like he has nothing to hide to the eyes of the casual fight fan whereas Manny has a cloud of suspicion hanging over his head now in the eyes of many people for his refusal to take the tests asked of him. However I for one do not blame him at all for refusing to subject himself to a completely different type of testing, since when is a p4p fighter obliged to take a different kind of blood test than any other fighter just to satisfy his opponent? Where is the precedent for such a move? There is none because its absurd, no fighter should be asked to do such a thing unless he has been proven to be a cheat in the past in which case I can understand such a request. But this does not apply in Manny`s case, so why the request from Mayweather and his camp? They claim that no fighter should be able to move up in weight and have increased punching power and speed and whatnot, but I for one am not surprised at Manny`s physical prowess at the higher weights as he has been for the longest time a natural 140-145 pound fighter going back as far as his days campaigning at 122. So really, where is the reason to ask for the olympic style bloodtesting? The answer is there simply isn`t, its just a ploy by Floyd and his people to get out of the fight and make Manny look like he is the one to blame for it not happening. But now some of you may ask why would Floyd do such a thing? Well, imo it has everything to do with the fact that Mayweather simply doesn`t want to take the risk of losing, simple as that. Look at his record closely over the last four years and besides Ricky Hatton Floyd hasn`t fought a live body at all during that time, not one and please if anyone is thinking of mentioning the likes of DLH or Judah save yourself the trouble as they were not worthy challengers for several different reasons which I won`t go into now although I will another time. Floyd imo doesn`t want no part of a fighter who is not intimidated by him in the least, not to mention one who is arguably just as fast as he is and who isn`t plagued by brittle hands like himself. Factor in Manny`s two fisted punching power, durability and improvement as a fighter overall and Floyd has his hands full and then some. Now with that said Floyd can still win this fight, he has the ability to do so and I wouldn`t rule him out completely as that would be foolish, but my guess is that he knows that even if he were to win, Manny is going to force him to fight out of his comfort zone and make him stand his ground much more than he would like to. And Manny is no Judah who is going to fold mentally if things get tough, he will be going right back into the Lion`s den every round and look to lay a hurting on Mayweather round after round, and Mayweather knows this and wants no part of it as the risk/reward is just too great imo. Mayweather`s undefeated resume is what he keeps pointing at when people question his accomplishments, he says he is the best of all-time and the best of this and that and whatnot because he is undefeated, but if he loses that (0) he can`t use it anymore to justify his greatness at least in his own eyes and that is simply too much of a risk for him. For all his ability and talent I honestly do believe that he is rather fragile psychologically, he definately seems to be judging by his actions and words and if that is the case one loss might see him unravel completely on some level or another. Anyway, this opening post is getting quite long so I`ll stop here, but I would like to hear the Classic sections take on this situation as I cannot remember the last time a fight of this magnitude fell thru for the reason it did.
I believe its Bob Arums fault. First off he is being forced to negotiate a fight with two people whom he promoted and left him on bad terms. He had to excuse himself from negotiations early on because it was too emotional for him??? He did most of the negative talk in the press from the get go and seemed to be trying to sabotage the fight early on. The blood testing issue was there from the beginning. Pac's side made a huge issue over it which I think is completely unjustified considering Mayweather was willing to go to a 14 day cutoff and was also subject to the very same testing. As far as Pac, hes no better than Mayweather with his demands lately. To me making a fighter subject himself to a blood test 14 days or even five days before a fight is not nearly as bad as making a welterweight champion fight at a lower catchweight regardless of whats in the rules or not. The demands and statements Pac has made regarding Yuri Foreman and the ten million dollar penalty for Mayweather being a pound overweight is making him look pretty bad, but this fight imploded because of Bob Arum. He cant stand the fact that Oscar and Mayweather would be making this kind of money, and his ego is so big that he would sacrifice what could possibly be a ressurecting fight for the sport of boxing. Shame on you Bob Arum you angry old man.
Floyd is to blame. I agree that He did not want the fight and thought of the drug testing to get himself out, it is a pity that a lot of the non hardcore fans will blame Pac for not getting the testing and will say he was/is on the roids. Floyd is what is wrong with boxing., his legacy with hardcore fans will take a big dive as his best win is still over Corrales, when it could of been Pac/SSM/Cotto etc...
The Olympic style testing notion was indeed unprecedented. As was Pacquiao's demand of a $10 million dollar fine for every pound Floyd came in over the limit. Floyd agreed to Pac's demands immediately, as well as the demand he placed on Pac regarding the drug testing. Pac not only refused, but sued. I don't think less of Floyd because I expected this kind of behavior out of him. On the other hand, I've lost all respect for, and am now very suspicious of Manny Pacquiao. He came out of this whole ordeal a lot worse, IMO.
Its both fighters fault imo Manny should have just flat out refused the olympic style testing from the get go instead we had his team constantly changing the reasons why he couldnt take blood and the time limits for when the tests should take place. Its floyd fault for asking in the first place then mannys fault for the way his team handled it which makes him look a little suspicious.
That is exactly what Floyd and his camp wanted out of this whole blood testing issue, to have it seem like he has something to hide and to have a cloud of suspicion hang over him and its working like a charm it seems as evidenced by the part I highlighted. Not taking a shot at you btw, just saying if you know what I mean. As for the suing, I believe that was over the accusations made and not by the requesting of the blood work. You are indeed right though that Pac came out of this ordeal a lot worse, and that is what is unfortunate as he shouldn`t have been placed in this position to begin with.
My sentiments as well. Random blood testing is a ridiculous request while a $10 mil per lb fine is OK? **** that, **** mayweather, **** pacquiao, and **** arum. shane mosley all day. :deal
EVERYONE! Floyd for allowing others to get into his ear to set forth test that have never been put forth before. Pac for not saying "Ok, fine" taking the test and sue him anyway. I mean seriously, for 40 mil you can take a damn test. Arum (most especially) for coming up with these ridiculous excuses for not being able to take the test and bringing forth nothing but negativity instead of doing his job as a promoter and finding a way to make the situation work. He had no intentions of finding a middle ground in order to place the blame completely on the Floyd camps shoulders. I must say, it's absolutely embarrassing that in this current era they can't get the best two fighters in the same division in the ring with one another....pathetic situation.
If Pac had simply agreed to go ahead with the testing (what was the real issue if not for the fact that he was masking something? pride? over $40 million) where would Floyd have to turn? If he'd continued making demands or backed out of the fight after that, it would just confirm what I and everyone else already knows, that Floyd is a *****. The blood test was Floyd's demand, the fine per poundage was Pacquiao's. Floyd agreed, Pacquiao didn't, and decided to sue. I have to say I blame Pacquiao more.
Both sides are right and wrong in a sense. The commissions oversee fights and do their own drug testing, fighters can ask for things outside in the norm in the contracts. Mayweather can ask for more stringest drug testing, as anyone with a basic knowledge of the drug testing in boxing knows that it doesn't take a genius to get around the testing, and Pacquiao can ask for penalties for an opponent being overweight as he has done on several occassions. As I've said before, things in the contract outside the norm aren't exactly unprecedented, and almost always the fighter with more leverage (i.e. box office power) is the one benefitting from it. Basically, I blame both of these ****ers and their camps for not coming to a compromise. In big fights like this, sides need to compromise. The difference was 10 days, is it THAT hard to meet in the middle?
I'm upset at the situation in general because I was dying to see this fight, and I'm surprised, honestly, that a compromise could not have been met. I think Floyd's reasoning about a fighter being able to move up and not maintain speed and power was unsound. It's a mix of training, conditioning, diet, and genes. Floyd himself started his amateur career at 108 and has still maintained, in my opinion, a fair amount of pop to his punches. Not trying to throw anyone under the bus here or discredit Pac's wins, but look at Pac's welterweight accomplishments. They all have some "baggage" if you will: De La Hoya: Old, weight-drained, has been on the slide for a while, and got soundly beaten by the younger man. Hatton: Floyd KO'ed him and he's been wobbled enough times in his career to indicate that his chin was not granite. Pac started fast and aggressive against him, something that is not known to happen with Hatton, and he got KO'ed. One could argue that Floyd could have accomplished the same or similar thing. Cotto: God only knows how the thrashing by Margarito (whether it was on the level or not) affected him. I'm not making excuses for Pac's losing opponents. All I am saying is that Floyd's argument about moving up in weight does not seem all that legit. I'm rambling. It is what it is. If they're not going to fight each other, I'd love to see at least one of them fight Shane Mosley. Depending on how he does in his next outing, of course.
That's all that needs to be said. I can't say i like Floyd's antics outside of the ring, but he went along with Pac's shitty demand and made an unprecented, but not unrealistic one himself. Pac backed out. Not Floyd. What was Floyd supposed to say: "Oh, you're using steroids, i didn't know that. Let's drop that testing bit then and go at it anyway!"
I never really bought into the suspicion of Pacquiao using PEDs because of him going through the size and getting bigger. His increase in size isn't all that much different than Mayweather, both around 105 lbs as teenagers. He's mostly just cut more weight, he weighed unofficially 144 in the Morales rematch in January 2006, 145 in the Marquez rematch in March 2008, 147 against Diaz, 148.5 against DLH, 148 against Hatton. Basically, my suspicion towards Pacquiao was always the same as other fighters. They MAY be on it, since it's all around sports, and it's not as if boxing has really strict testing anyway.
