I think Pac-Pbf will happen late 2010. Probably in Nov/Dec. Why? Here are my reasons. 1. Too much $$$$ involved. 2. Arum/GBP are greedy sobs, they can't pass this opportunity and pbf fights for money, not legacy. 3. The failed negotiations are scripted to hype the fight even more. 4. Pac-Clottey and PBF-Hatton/P.Williams/Campbell are there to hype the fight even more. 5. Pac-Clottey in Dallas Stadium is a 'test the waters' fight for a future pac-pbf showdown there. 6. PBF will withdraw random blood test demand in exchange Pac will withdraw the lawsuit. Just one more thing. Arum said that PBF flat out denied Arum's offer and not even counter-offering during the negotiations with the mediator. If PBF denied without counter-offering, why did the negotiations with the mediator take 2 full days?
You could very well be right mate. It'd still be a disgrace on both of them if they are pulling a hype-job, but at least the fight would happen.
:? It is boxing, if it is hype job, it is because one/both parties believe there is more money in the fight. That is not a disgrace, it is smart!
Smart ? Well, they have me hating both of them & utterly determined not to pay a penny to see anything concerning either of them.... Im guessing Im not the only one. This aint hype.... its schoolgirl drama aka bull****.
But I (and no doubt, Millions of others) am going to pay for it, if they are both the right side of 40. Boxing always seems better when things do not come easy. By not fighting each other in March, the anticipation can build for the fight, and providing neither loses in the mean time, the fight (for the next two/three years at least) gets bigger and bigger.
I agree with you that it will be bigger. But bigger does not = better in my reckoning. To me things like honesty, integrity, respect for the sport are more important. You'll have to pardon me but I don't have posters of Bob Arum and Don King on my wall. Fights of course need some promotion, but not to the point where they start bullshitting the public. When that happens you start having situations like Mayweather being declared the best welterweight in the world without having faced a single top 5 welterweight. That is, you start getting bull****.
LOL, but it is boxing; honesty, integrity and respect for the sport, rarely get you serious money. In this era of clean living sportsman, I think it is a benefit of boxing that the casual fan still (probably rightly) thinks the sport is crocked and corrupt, it adds a unique selling point. After all, I suspect more people know Don King's face than Mayweather or (outside the Philippines) Pacquiao.
That the sport is sold on the angle that it is crooked and corrupt though is the very reason imo that the sport is treated as a joke today. It's also the reason why something like darts is likely to get about as much coverage as boxing in the mainstream media. The amount of bull**** in the sport has absolutely killed its ability to be regarded as a serious enterprise, at least imo.
But boxing has always been like this. It is cleaner and on the level more now, than it probably has ever been. To sanitize the sport anymore, would be to totally ruin it, IMO.
The hype/substance ratio though has never been more skewed. We are seeing more bullshitting and less reality now than we ever have in the sport. Whilst it might not be corruption in the purest sense, it still stinks.
I would disagree, more than ever the fans get what they say they want, they just get it far too quickly and do not appreciate it.
The fighters are getting too much control and too much money, and for that almost every fight thats promoted by rival promoters is a whirlwind of BS. Its great fighters are taking control of their own careers, but the control factor is getting out of hand, especially when a blood test can blow up a 40 million dollar payday.
But we are not taking the punches, I think it is great a fighter can make demands and if he does not get his way, can walk away. Better that, than fighting blindfold with ten other men in a last man standing Battle Royale with the purse being whatever nobbings are thrown.
I want unification matches in every weight division. I want fighters to clean divisions out before they jump weights. I want fighters to face the best out there and not cherry pick opponents. I want fighters to fight for reasonable purses and not exorbitant amounts based on their ability to swindle the public into thinking they are worth it. I want fighters to fight at normal weights and not catch weights strategically designed to cripple their opponents. Am I really getting what I say I want?
