Pac ranked no.5 at Welter by Ring Magazine

Manny Pacquiaos eighth-round knock out of Oscar De La Hoya did more than force a lot of boxing writers to eat crow. The fabulous Filipinos drubbing of the sports biggest star sent shock waves throughout the industry and affected two weight classes in THE RINGs divisional ratings.

Pacquiao, currently ranked no. 2 by THE RING at lightweight, was installed as the no. 5-rated welterweight by THE RINGs editorial board after his spectacular debut at 147 pounds. And because of the one-sided nature of his loss, De La Hoya was
dropped from THE RINGs junior middleweight rankings.

Pacquiao may soon be a factor in the junior welterweight rankings if a proposed bout with THE RING champ Ricky Hatton is made next year, a move that would further add to comparisons to legendary triple-division champion Henry Armstrong, but lets not get ahead of ourselves.

Read on to find out how Pacquiaos rise and De La Hoyas fall affected THE RINGs welterweight and junior middleweight rankings, as well as movement in
other weight classes.

Super middleweight: THE RING dropped Jeff Lacy because of his dismal performance against Jermain Taylor and inserted Andre Dirrell, who had the best record (17-0, with 12 knockouts) among the up-and-comers. Lacy, who had struggled with journeyman Epifanio Mendoza coming into the Taylor fight, was ranked No. 10 before being outclassed by the former middleweight champ. Taylor
is ranked No. 5.

Junior middleweight: Who knows whether De La Hoya will ever fight again, but as he hasnt beaten a ranked junior middleweight since his sixth-round knock out of Ricardo Mayorga in May of 2006 and looked so bad against Pacquiao at welterweight, THE RING decided it was time for him to go. This bumped up everybody below De La Hoya last week one spot each, and made room for undefeated buzzsaw James Kirkland (24-0, 21 KOs) at No. 10.

Welterweight: As THE RING has done with a few elite fighters in the past, Pacquiao is now rated in two divisions: welterweight and lightweight. Its a
strange situation, as he will probably fight Hatton at junior welterweight next, but we couldnt rank him there as hes never fought at 140 pounds. Whenever possible, THE RINGs Editorial Board (with the participation of the Ratings Panel of boxing journalists from around the world) base fighter rankings on results within the division. Kermit Cintron, rated No. 10 last week, was pushed
out by Pacquiaos inclusion.

Junior featherweight: Sergio Medina, previously ranked No. 5, looked so horrible against THE RINGs No. 3 contender, hard-punching titleholder Juan Manuel Lopez, that THE RING dropped the Argentine altogether, bumping up those below him last week one notch each, and inserting the UKs Rendall Munroe (16-1, seven KOs) at No. 10.

Wow - he gets ranked as #5 after only one fight.

So that puts him behind - Margarito, Williams, Mosley, & Cotto. I'm not sure about that one.

And what the hell happened to my Vcash?

Williams is now ranked #2 at Jr. Middle.

Welterweight Rankings:

1. Margarito
2. Cotto
3. Mosley
4. Clottey
5. Pacquiao

I agree with the rankings as nobody except the top 4 welters, and now Pac, would have done that to DLH.

I think Margarito would beat Pac. Moseley and Cotto also have a chance.

Ranking Pac higher than #5 based on beating a semi-retired HOF who fought at weight much lower than his natural makes no sense.
