I know everybody wanted to see Marg get his face filled in and I'd have felt unsatisfied had the ref stopped the fight, but lets say for example Pac was fighting someone else and had inflicted that sort of damage, I think the ref would most likely have stopped the fight as early as the 7th/8th round.

The fact it was then revealed that the punishment he'd suffered caused a fractured orbital bone and a detached retina might well reflect badly on the referees ability to judge when a fight should be stopped.

Does anyone know if any kind of disciplinary action was brought against the ref? Had it been absolutely anyone else in the ring, I'd have been disappointed that the ref allowed it to continue. Marg however doesn't deserve the privelage of a referees health conscious intervention.

Pretty sure it was agreed that the fight would not be stopped. Pac could have stabbed him and the ref wouldn't have intervened. Margo was in there to take a beating.

Margarito’s heart and will to continue fighting back, was what stopped the referee from intervening. Had he covered up and not answer Pac’s onslaught, I’m prettier sure the referee’s decision to stop the fight would have been easier.

If you’re looking for someone to blame, turn your attention to the corner. They know their fighter better than the referee. They know exactly when their guy has nothing left, and they’re the first people in the arena to notice Margarito putting up a fruitless resistance.

Not looking for anyone to blame, just wondering what the general consensus is. As I understand, the corner's obligation to intervene is only really moral, whereas a referees responsibility to intervene is more official, putting first the health and safety of the fighter, and that should the health and safety be compromised, the referee is the sole individual responsible and is then upheld by the governing state.

Margo wasn't really close to going so no it shouldn't have been stopped, it wasn't obvious Margo had a damaged eye either, so no he was right not to stop it

I remember Pac motioned for the ref to waive it off after landing some punches, but it wasn't after serious flurry where he had Margarito helpless or anything. Margarito was still there fighting and trying to win. Accumulation is a difficult thing to stop fights by, every fighter's capacity to absorb punishment is different and every blow is different. That's why so many have unfortunately died in the ring as the ref's had no idea of the internal damage they'd taken. In Margarito's case the damage he sustained was evident in his eye, and the ref did have the ringside doctor check it on a couple of occasions from memory. The doc said he was ok so I find it hard to blame the ref in that instance. Margarito's corner should take the blame there.

there were all kinds of other people from the commission and ringside doctors there....if it was so bad they would have suggested the ref stop it.....its not like no one else was watching and they cant do **** but hope the ref stops it...quit being such a little girl. maybe they didnt think the little guy outweighed by 20 pounds was breaking bones in the guys face... maybe they werent sure that the former flyweight champion was risking the life of the former welterweight champion.....

Margo too proud, corner too stupid. Margo was fighting back and never looked wobbly on his feet so the ref couldn't stop it really.

That fight was a weird series of emotions.
I started watching hoping Margo would take a hellacious beating for the wrap thing.
But by the 8th i was already thinking he was maybe taking too much, and by the 10th i was really hoping for it to get stopped because i did not want to see a death in the ring.
Fortunately Pac after trying to get the fight waved off took a lot of his punches.

Only other time in recent memory where i felt this worried was Briggs, but by god Vitali would have killed him if needed he really tried to get him out of there to the last second.
So weird how Vitali after the fight immediately had huge admiration and respect for Briggs but i really think he would have killed him within the 12 rnds if it was needed.

In both fights i put full blame on the corner they need to protect the fighters health because the damage in beatings like that can be very costly.

The referee can only go by what he sees and knows. And what he saw that night, was a guy who, despite being on the end of a one-sided beatdown, was still fighting back. It's here when the corner has to contribute also, because they have a better understanding of how much their fighter has left.
