Nice to see that there are still people in the world who remembers this. Too much of his pro career was spent sort of stalking after opponents to land a big right (I blame it on the opposition mostly). That's probably why people here think he needed a lot of space.
I blame his neglecting his boxing skills and just wanting to be a power puncher on a few things. 1) Falling in love with his power, who doesn't like to KO guys along with the media, fame, money, attention that you get for being that kind of fighter. 2) His trainer was more of a conditioning guy more than stratagy/technique guy. Going from a Soviet school of boxing where fundementals are emphasized i imagine he wasn't pushed to maintain a focus on that. I think Eurasian guys with Western trainers isn't a great idea for the most part. Tszyu, Jirov, Darchynian, Lyakhovich all guys with great skill and can box who turned away from that at one point or another. Staying with their own trainers whenever possible is the best idea in my mind. That's one think that i worry about with Korobov, he is incredibly technically skilled, the guy has ****ing everything but he also has serious power in both hands just like Jirov and Tszyu and i hope he doesn't throw away the rest of his game. I don't like seeing him with an American trainer.
Maybe so. I pretty sure I remember Tszyu saying once that he was tired of being seen as a puncher though. I'd like to know from what year that interview was made but I can't find it. I read that Korobov was trained by Ken Adams. He's supposedly a very technical trainer and have coached the US amateur team. Perhaps the match is a good one.
I saw the Tszyu vs Lopez fight and maybe i was exaggerating when i said a gift decision, but I do think Lopez pulled it out in a close fight but then again I could be biased since i knew Lopez at one time. I had Lopez winning by a 1 point, from what I remember KT came on late, but Lopez was outboxing him early. I remember Rafeal Ruelas hurting Tszyu and Ruelas had moved up for that fight, but then again Ruelas was a good puncher.
