Good match up. Manny might have too much speed for Vargas but Vargas would have muscled him around a bit and banged on him. We also have to state when his prime was bc he was in with Tito at like 21 or 23.
Vargas was a great fighter at one point and this would, no doubt, be an excellent fight. I could see Pacquiao pulling out the win because of his superior speed and boxing skill but he would be playing with fire if he allowed Vargas to land the shots Cotto and Margarito did.
Pac wins. Speed kills. There are/were good fighters at 154 that can beat Pac. Vargas isn't one of them.
If we are talking about any Vargas from Campas to Tito, or the one from the Hoya fight, I actually think Vargas could give Pac all he could handle. Lets be clear here, a prime Vargas at 154lbs, is more dangerous to Pac then any fighter he has fought since Morales and JMM. Not to mention, Pac has never even FOUGHT a legit 154lber fighter (excluding Hoya, who came in as a welterweight). People often confuse Margarito as some high level 154lb operator, when in reality hes not. Hes a huge 147lber that has had his success at 147lbs. Vargas is on a completely different level then Margarito, and it would show. Vargas would not just rush in looking for a slugfest. Anyone who knows prime Vargas knows he was as precocious as he was ferocious, and he while he would def use his strength and size to his advantage, it would be supplemented by using good footwork, setting up his shots, and boxing as much as fighting. However, the fighter Pac has become is very dymanic in most aspects, he is no longer falling in throwing 1-2's, he can counterpunch, he darts all about with unpredictability and does so with quickness, he can box when he wants and brawl when he wants, also, with Vargas being a relatively short 154lber, the 'size' difference wont mean as much in this matchup as it would suggest, and I think strength is a hard thing to use against Pac at this stage because of how good his movement has become. Decent matchup, one in which Vargas will be facing two of his weaknesses, speed and power. I think Vargas wins the early rounds, up until around round 6 or so when Pacs speed starts to take over, catching Vargas with zipping shots, busting Feroz's face up a bit, until about round 9 or 10 where I feel the Championship rounds are up for grabs.... not sure who to favor here. Good fight, if Pac was any less mobile I would pick Vargas to maul him and wear him down, but Pac has the right blend of speed, power, and mobility.
See, this is why "the ______ that beat _______" analogy doesn't work. Pac's style is completely different from Winky's. As they say, styles make fights.
It's hard to say how Manny would handle a true 154 pounder who was very good in his prime. Vargas was hittable, though. Manny would hit him a lot. I think Manny busts Vargas up and gets hit quite a bit. I'm chickening out on this one since I am huge fans of both.
I think Vargas had a good enough jab to neutralize Manny's speed a bit and he would throw that left hook up top and down stairs to that body plus Vargas had a great right hand. Also Vargas would slam Manny to the ground if he had to. Prime Vargas had more heart than Manny could ever have.
