World Boxing Council lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao plans to retire in 2009.

After his fight against Mexican-American Oscar de la Hoya on December 6, Pacquiao said he plans to have just two more fights before hanging his gloves in 2009.

Pacquiao could earn a whopping $15 million from his mega-fight with de la Hoya, analysts said.

Pacquiao told ABS-CBN News that his mother Dionisia and his relatives have long wished his retirement, and he thinks it is time to heed their advice.

"Definitely, late this year, gusto na kong pagretirin ng magulang ko. At tama, dahil mahirap ang trabaho ko, so naintindihan ko naman sila," said Pacquiao.

But the Filipino boxing hero, however, said he will have two more fights after his match with De la Hoya.

When asked if he will again try politics after retirement, Pacquiao refused to comment.

Speculations are rife about PacquiaoÂ’s political ambitions as some quarters said his plan to run as congressman of Sarangani is the main reason why he is contemplating about retirement.

The next elections are scheduled in May 2010.

In May 2007, Pacuiao lost to Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio in the first district of South Cotabato.

De la Hoya fight formally announced

De la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) announced Friday morning in Manila the non-title, superbout match between the six-division champion and Pacquiao on December 6 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The battle pits two of the most recognizable and popular talents in the sport today in what will surely be the grand finale of the 2008 boxing calendar.

"Manny Pacquiao is considered the best fighter in boxing today, and I always want to fight the best," said De La Hoya. "I am glad we were able to make this fight happen because while Pacquiao is at the pinnacle of his success and has defeated all of the top fighters he has faced, I am going to show the world that it stops with me. December 6 can't get here soon enough."

"This is my greatest challenge," said Pacquiao. "When I take that walk to the ring to fight Oscar, I will carry all the people of the Philippines - the entire country - on my shoulders. I promise I will fight with all of my heart and that I will give everything I have. Like my trainer Freddie Roach says, I have what it takes to win the biggest fight of my life."

After several weeks of amicable discussions between De La Hoya's company, Golden Boy Promotions, and Pacquiao's promoter, Top Rank, Inc., a deal was struck this week ensuring fans around the world the opportunity to see this dream match-up.

    2 more fights? :yep

Yeah . . . fight the winner of Campbell/Guzman and the winner of Casa JMM.

or . . . fight Hatton first . . . if Hatton wins against Malignaggi . . . then let the winners of Casa/JMM and Campbell/Guzman fight each other and earn the right to fight Pacquaio.

    Perfect . . . 2 fights!

After that . . . the hell I don't care what Pacquaio does with his life. :D :deal

If he somehow able to beat DLH, he should fight the winner of JMM-Guzman (if they prevailed against Campbell and Casa).

Then fight one easy fight as last fight before retirement.

I doubt it. After DLH KO's pac he's probably going to go for a tune up. Which would mean he wont retire in 2009. After pac realizes 135 is his limit he is going to go after JMM for his last fight after he fights a tune up. I can't wait for 2009!:happy :happy :happy
