in the sense that both opponents were average champions in the division at the time. Both were beaten to the pulp. Pacmans win was better as he defined it with a highlight reel KO.
lacy was certainly considered better then pac at the time, lacy was favourite in america for sure, diaz wasnt but yes, the beating was similiar
Lacy was called the new Tyson, P4P11-12, the best in the division and everyone picked him to knock out Calzaghe. But almost everyone picked PacMan to beat the lucky-to-be-champ Diaz, the weakest elite LW, it was a mismatch on paper and turned out to be one... But PacMan punished Diaz as bad as Calzaghe Lacy, and knocked out, so hey, it was as dominant as Calzaghe's win plus the KO...
Mike Tyson was a Knockout puncher.. Lacy's best Ko wins were against Shot Robin Reid and Scott Pemberton. He barely scaped by a Journeyman called Omar Sheika before he fought Joe. That pours scorn onto his reputation of being dangerous puncher. The fact is Calzaghe had a very weak division to bully, and the american needed to build up a muscle bound plodder into a marketable commodity.
That KO still looks weird how the hell did he get any power in a shot that travelled about 3 inches. Pacs win was better Joe was a SM and had been for years. Pac been down a stick weight now hes up amongst the big boys
If Jeff Lacy had been European, or Mexican, no bugger would have heard of him! That said, a fair few (not me) were picking Lacy to bash Joe up on the basis of their wins over different versions of Robin Reid - Calzaghe SD (prime) Lacy KO (shot). The Pac win is better, not just because of the KO, but for me the way that he carried his tools up in weight - many fighters (Hatton, Calzaghe etc) struggle to maintain their strengths moving up in weight - so that impresses me.
look at these ****ing bitter douchebags trying to shovel **** onto one of the most flawless displays of boxing in recent years. thepresident must have thought it was his lucky day when calzaghe faced up with lacy, how much money did you lose on it?
Calzaghe did put in a flawless display - Lacy was hit at will. A last round stoppage would have put the seal on it though for me.
The big difference in the two fights is the general opinion of both fighters. DDDiaz was deservedly not considered a great fighter . Lacy was a massive hype job and the fans bought into that. He isn't much better than Diaz, if at all. The difference is how the press hyped them both and how people bought into it. I think both wins should be regarded in the same way. However, because of the difference in opinion of Lacy and Diaz, Calzaghe's win will always be unjustifiably looked upon as the greater achievement.
It was better in all aspects. Speed, power, combination punching, defense, offense, movement. He made Diaz, also an Olympian, looked like a struggling amateur/sparring session-kind of boxer who has no future stored in him. It was that kind of demolition and schooling. The KO was just an icing in the cake. And after the fight, you would thought Diaz was ganged up nonstop by ten desperate avenging people. Seriously, it was that bad.
