Oscar weighed in at 145. But that wasnt in he contract IIRC. But that still isnt my point. Oscar was drained, I'm not denying that. But that was Oscar's own doing. It made logical sense. He was a Middle, Pac a lightweight, 4 divisions apart. They met in the middle which is what oscar called for. It was Manny demanding anything. Plus, my point still stands. EVERYONE thought Oscar would destroy him as he was far too big. It was only with highnsight that people's opinion's changed.
Again, i'll repost this: I dont understand why people say this. Pac has had 3 catchweight fights. The first against Cotto with a 2lb change (only 2lb but still a catchweight), the next against Margo which everyone knows was a bull**** move, and as a result not many people take his LMW title seriously, and the 3rd against Marquez (at 144 IIRC). But it was the mexican who wanted a catchweight. So, in total, he has forced his opponents to lose a grand total of 6lb, while his opponents (marquez), has brought Pac down by 3lb. That means, in almost 60 fights, Pacquiao has drifted into the realms of catchweights twice by his own doing, and gained a total of 3lb advantage. While I dont agree with catchweights, if you take his career as a hole, it is a small footnote in the grand scheme of things. That means Cotto is 1 catchweight fight away from drawing level with the 'catchweight' king.
Pac is scared of Cotto at his strong weights-De La Hoya too, and for whatever reason, he didn't fight the garbage Margarito at 154 LMFAO..
1. The last few pounds are the most difficult to lose, this is common Boxing knowledge, I've been there myself and it messes you up mentally as much as physically. The 145lb catchweight forced Cotto to focus his training on making 145lbs, not on preparing for Pacquaio. Cotto was not weight drained when he fought Manny, but he was not as prepared as he should of been, as a result. 2. Nobody has a real problem with him fighting Margo at 150lbs. The problem is that the fight was for a 154lb title and Pacquaio's fans regard him as a legit 8 division world champion. 3. Marquez wanted 140lbs for the Pacquaio fight, (remember this is the Pacquaio who Ariza claims has to be reminded to eat constantly so they get to 145lbs for he WW fights) Marquez is moving up from LW, where he's small anyways, to fight at 147lbs. Marquez is forced to fight at a 144lb catchweight rather than the even 140lb playing field.
His 154 title was fabricated. In all fairness though, its his decision to not fight at 154 anymore and if he wants to stick to it i think its ok. He is a small guy after all. Should be fighting at 140.
1. If the last few pounds are the hardest to lose, Oscar wouldnt have had a problem coming down from 160, which is obviously not the case. I personally dont agree that 2lb made any phycial difference, but the Psycological effect which you illuded probably did make a difference. Having said that, Cotto weighed only 146 for his previous fight. I dont think 1lb would make me not sleep at night. 2. That's because most Pacquaio fans are a little ******ed. 3.Marquez had to move up two weights (in effect, 1 and a half), just like Manny had to with Oscar. What my main problem is, is that people call him the catchweight king which is a little silly IMO. In 60 or so fights, he has made his opponent lose more weight than what is needed only twice. Is what Manny's doing any worse than Ray Leonard fighting for the Super Middleweight title at 160lb, and the Lightheavyweight title at 168? Now that's taking the ****
I agree. But still does not mean Floyd is doing something heroic move here... but seriously this is pretty decent fight but notthe god damn Fight what we have been waiting for years..
Pac is basically a JrWW (not even a big one) fighting at 147. Why would he fight at 154 Floyd is bigger than Pac so the comparison is moot.
PAc weighed in at 144 for that fight Martinez is fighting in March and Cotto st the official WBC Jr Middleweight champ
