I liked Pacquiao's upperbody movement when he fought Marquez the first time (the big draw) I was just wondering if he still uses this type of movement or if anyone else uses it? I hadn't noticed anyone using it as much as he did before... Does it have a name, etc?

Sorry, boxing newbie! We don't use that movement so much in MuayThai.

Also any drills to work on it would be good

I've only seen him fight a couple times but Im pretty sure he does regularly... I dont beleive it has a name though. What me and my trainer does is after I throw a punch or punch combo into their mitts is they swing back with a hook or straight and I do alot of upperbody movement that way slipping em.

Tyson used, and was particularly renowned for, the same head movement.

A drill to practice would be to tie a piece of string at shoulder level, start on one side, throw a punch, duck under the string and throw another punch, duck back under to the other side and throw another punch... repeat.

They call that "Bobbin and Weavin" where I'm from!

But Manny gets into his own nice kind of rythmm with it... and explodes with punches off those moves. He seems to do it less in the last couple of fights. I think it was getting too predictable... and if you study tape on a guy you can figure out how to time him etc. based on that body movement.

I remember Manny Stewart commenting on that same thing one time,,, and saying that it reminded him a bit of a young Tyson.

Yeah, it is a very rhymatic type of movement, I wonder in a way if it is a weakness doing it so left, right, left, right, because it seems you could obviously wait for him to go left and then line up your shots for when he finally goes right? Although I guess that is easier said than done.

I think it is a good style for him, obviously when he leans out to the right he is set up for a powerful hook already and the left he is back enough for the left, it's cool. Maybe I will give it a go in sparring and see what it does to my training partners.

He used to do it a lot until he moved up to 130. That's when he started to develop boxing skills and learned to pick his shots better and counterpunch. Like someone said above it was making him predictable so he had to evolve.

It seems very tyson like, using youtube to look up the videos... wonder if it is a Roach taught technique. He seems to use it to set up shots also, I guess it works well defensively and keeps you on your toes... just gotta practice it now, see what it does for my game.

Man, I'd so love to find out what kinda drills Manny does for footwork and specific pad / bag drills... he is just so damned good ;) I like the idea someone said above of throwing a punch after every combination. Don't spose there are any of his rough routines flying about anywhere?
