Pacquaio's speed and power vs. Cotto's swiss cheese defence

All good, valid points. I don't envision Pac being a one-punch KO artist at welter, but I don't think his power will fail to materilze either. Cotto was put on his arse by 140lbers earlier in his career, his defense is porous and he is susceptible to sharp, accurate punches when they do land - the key being: they will land and often - because when big, slow, unrefined welters like Margo and Clottey are landing at will, then you're going to be in a lot of trouble when you're fighting a quick, nible, accurate and hurtful puncher like Pacquaio.

The trade-off in terms of what is the biggest factor, is between Pac's ability to take a punch, and Cotto's ability to stop Pac landing. I think I'm more confident that Pacquiao can hang in there long enough to punish Cotto with stinging uppercuts and the like, than I am in Cotto being able to pin down and hurt Pac early on. I just don't think Cotto has the skills to shut down Pacquaio's attack.

"Little bearing on the fight" are you serious? he fought 9 rounds with one eye, what he showed after the second round were a big heart and bigger pair of cojones

 PAC's defense sucks? That is funny....both men have good "D". But PAC operates with a higher level of talent which gives him a very nice edge in reflexes which he uses to full advantage. He's harder to hit than Cotto b/c he's so fast and his reflexes are so quick. Cotto doens't have that working to his advantage unforunately.

See this is another thing I don't understand...when the **** has Pac ever displayed a signature uppercut? Or even an effective one?! :huh

Everyone talks about this, but no one offers up evidence that Manny can pull off a good one. WITHOUT being countered mind you...

Actually during the first three rounds Cotto established an excellent defense using his boxing ability, angles and gloves to block Clottey's attack. It wasn't until after the cut that Cotto decided to open up more in desperation...his corner hinted towards the cut being quite bad and Cotto then changed his game plan. This allowed Clottey to land more often and Cotto to utilize his legs rather than his gloves and angles to effectively defend the on coming Josh. The main reason why Clottey took his foot off the gas was not because of his poor conditioning it was because he was being countered extremely well of course punch stats will tell you otherwise because cottos counter where hitting the target during Clotteys barrage of lunging right hands. I'm not surprised at the observations of those that side with Clottey...it was a close fight but it was also a bit misleading espeacially for those who are emphatically predicting total domination for Pac when he faces Cotto in a couple weeks.

:patsch You are comparing Pacquiao's best attribute to Cotto's weakest; lets change the thread title to: "Cotto's powerful left hook to the body (livershot) to Pacquiao's poor body-punch resistance"... "Hmm, I've been looking at some Pacquiao tape where he was ko'd by a bodyshot by an unknown boxer and I can't help but think if Cotto delivers the perfect shot to the liver...":patsch

My point being that Cotto's best attributes as a boxer is his offense and natural boxing ability ... one of Manny's biggest flaws has always been his defense which was "exposed" by Marquez landing counters all night, not to mention Morales when he beat him. Cotto has had trouble against big powerful guys who push him back, Manny's style simpy isn't that.

You mean when he was weight drained? Or that one time Torres pushed him to the floor?...

Because otherwise Cotto has never been "put on his arse"...hurt? Sure. Wobbled? Yea. Took a knee? Yup. "Put on his arse"? Never.

And understand that Cotto's STYLE doesn't allow him much room for defense. He is definitely there to be hit, but if you watched ANY Cotto fight...you will understand that although you may tag Miguel...YOU WILL! get tagged in the process.

Look at his fights with Gomez, Jennings, Margarito, Paulie, Quintana, Judah...or just any one of his fights...all of them hit him a lot, but during their offense, they also received much punishment in return...and NONE of them (with the exception of Margo) responded well to it. They all either ran for the hills or became overly hesitant to initiate an offense. Mosley stood there befuddled as to what to do next because he didn't want to get him as often. Judah began backpedaling. Paulie ran. Gomez folded. Jennings tried that in-n-out attack with a nice 1-2 deal, but got caught with serious left hooks on his way out. Quintana tried employing lateral movement and was caught on the ropes and on the end of a nice body attack.

Pac's ability to take a punch has been slightly fogged because he hasn't been tagged FLUSH above 130. But believe it when Pacquiao all of a sudden doesn't respond well to his first serious flush punch at WW. His eyes will go dead for a second with every punch. He will either run (which I doubt) or go ape **** like he always does when he's hurt (did it against Marquez, Morales, Hussein, and many others)...and THIS will be his downfall.

The fact that it had little bearing on the fight, is a credit to Miguel Cotto.

It didn't have a bearing, because he wouldn't let it.

Also, the rounds before the cut, are not significantly different to those afterwards, the only big difference is Cotto's sense of urgency.

That's the dilemma, deciding what is the most important factor(s) in this fight. I've certainly struggled with that.

I think the questions or "factors" in this fight for Pac are this

    Speed...is it too much?
    Power...will it carry up?
    Chin...can it hold up?

I think the questions or "factors" in this fight for Cotto are this

    Timing...can he catch him?
    Chin...can he withstand the attack?
Weight...will the 145 catchweight affect him?

I agree. People will slate you for it, but this is a good brief analysis. Cotto fans just aren't addressing the defence issue in their threads. How exactly is Miguel going to (a) see the punches coming, and (b) defend effectively against them? Larry Merchant said during the commentary of the Pacquiao-Oscar fight that it was "Death By A Thousand Left Hands". I think this will be "Death By A Thousand Lefts, Rights, Uppercuts and Bodyshots". Pacquiao will go to town on that porous defence, and although Cotto is a very good fighter and will have his moments, he can't stand up to the tornado of punches raining in on him. KO7.

I seriously doubt that. I won't doubt that he'll hit him and a lot, but have you seen Oscar's defense in that fight? He didn't bother to try and move or block or parry. He literally just stood there. He finally tried to use lateral movement in the 8th when it was too late...but cmon now. Give Cotto a little more credit than that...he's much better than that.

Hatton's problem has always been swining with his hands down. Cotto doesn't share this problem...So yes. Cotto's defense is better than his last two opponents, but it won't mean that he WON'T get hit. We Cotto fans know this, but what you Pacfans keep ignoring or dismissing is that Pacquiao WILL get hit trying to exit after his flurry. It happens to nearly ALL of Cotto's more agile opponents. He simply times them and finds them on the way out.

Marquez isn't really a genius defensive wizard either and he did okay. Cotto will be a slight bit better. Just wait and see :good

People are underrating Cotto's defense, both Mosley and Judah have more power than Pacquiao ad they weren't able to Ko him how is pac supposed to do it?
