Pacquiao’s camp blames Arum on ‘no-title’ fiasco

The insistence of Miguel Cotto not to stake his world title when he fights Manny Pacquiao is being blamed on Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum.
Pacquiao lawyer Franklin Gacal said on Friday that Arum's hasty decision to come out with an announcement about the Pacquiao-Cotto fight scheduled Nov. 14 in Las Vegas early last week could be one of the reasons behind the insistence of Cotto to stand firm on his decision not to stake the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown.
"I don't know why Bob made the announcement when in fact we haven't seen the (official) contract," said Gacal when asked about the other pertinent details of the contract.
Arum has both Pacquiao and Cotto under the promotional banner of Top Rank.
Cotto's decision not to risk the WBO 147-lb crown stems from the fact that the fight is going to be at a catch weight of 145 lbs and that during the negotiations, Team Pacquiao did not bother to raise the issue.
Cotto said he will only risk the WBO title if Pacquiao agrees to face him at 147 lbs.
"(My decision is) final and firm," Cotto told El Nuevo Dia in a story that appeared on the paper's July 31 issue. "The belt is not going to be on the line in the fight."
Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach, already panicky about the prospects of bringing Pacquiao somewhere else other than the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, was bothered when told about the development.
"The WBO should make it a title fight. We don’t need the fight if the title is not on the line," Roach told The Bulletin. "I want Manny to do this for a reason. I want Manny to win seven world titles. Titles are overrated but I would like to see Manny do this."
There's been no seven-division world champion in boxing and Roach is dead-sure Pacquiao will become the very first when he faces Cotto.
Pacquiao has won legitimate world titles at flyweight (112 lbs), super-bantam (122), super-feather (130) and lightweight (135), but was widely recognized as well when he beat Marco Antonio Barrera for the Ring magazine featherweight (126) crown and Ricky Hatton last May even if the Englishman, considered as the best in the division, held the fringe International Boxing Organization junior-welter (140) diadem.

    I can see both arguments.

    Here is the solution though;

Fight for the WBO welterweight title at the welterweigbht limit of 147lbs. Simple.

Exactly, and the funny thing is that Pacquiao will still be the betting favorite at 147 like he is right now at 145, but it is what it is I guess.

Roach makes me laugh with his comments "Title belts are overrated but i will like for Manny to win one" lol. Hey Roach why you want Many to win one if the title belts are overrated?

They are making a huge issue out of a small one.

"We don’t need the fight if the title is not on the line" sounds like a bull**** quote

The title is just a small bonus. Cotto is showing his true colours by saying he refuses to put it on the line, the fans recognize that.

Exactly Benny. A day after Cotto beat Clottey, alot of fans, media, boxers pick Pacquiao to beat Cotto even if it's at 147 pounds. If 145 pound is no big deal to *******s then whats the problem with 147 pound weight limit?

I think he still beats Cotto at 147 tbh. There is also no excuses if they fight at the proper weight.

Props to Cotto for not putting his belt on the line. At a catch weight a fighter don't have to put up his title if it's not in the weight limit. People say" Oscar vs Hopkins was at a catch weight but nobody complain" Well duh the reason nobody complain cause Hopkins wanted that fight so damn bad. Oscar didn't want to move up at a middleweight limit so Hopkins say "I'll come to 157 pounds to fight De la hoya" De la hoya didn't need Hopkins but Hopkins was so desperate that he needed De la hoya cause of his pay day in which Hopkins got 16 or 17 million dollars plus ppv bonus. Cotto didn't beg Arum for the Pacquiao fight at all like Hopkins beg for the De la hoya fight.

My thoughts exactly. I respect the **** out of Roach but he's really starting to **** me off with the way he's coming off like sounding like such a whiny ***** in regards to the weight this fight should take place at and whether or not the belt is on the line.

How is Cotto showing his true colors? Why should he put his title on the line if it's not in the welterweight limit? Yes 145 pounds is a welterweight fight but it's not in the welterweight limit. And Cotto being smart cause he has to pay sanction fees if the title is on the line. It's simple and easy If Pacquiao wants that title belt so badly then fight Cotto at the welterweight limit in which is 147 pounds isn't that so hard?
