Hey guys, I was really thinking about Pacquiao recently. Although he has improved a lot over the past few years and his last couple fights have been very impressive (the Hatton knockout was spectacular), I feel that he is becoming overrated. He’s exciting, and I love the fact that he’ll fight anybody, but people are not performing a deeper analysis of his last couple fights and opponents. After earning a razor thin decision over Marquez (a great boxer who is going to fight Mayweather and will most likely lose to Floyd but Floyd will get virtually no credit for beating him), his last two opponents were guys that Mayweather already beat. Some people argue that Pacquiao stopped them and/or beat them more soundly and the proves something, but on top of the fact that Mayweather is not known as a puncher, the De La Hoya that fought Pacman was nowhere near the one that Mayweather fought and beat. He was weight drained, older, slower, and getting hit with everything but the kitchen sink. If the De La Hoya that fought Mayweather showed up the night that Pacquiao fought him, the fight would have been much more competitive. As far as Hatton is concerned, he was knocked out my Mayweather prior to fighting Pac. He was undefeated when he faced Mayweather, and although his chin was never made of iron, it wasn’t made of glass either. At this point of his career, Hatton should do commercials for Windex. After being knocked out by Mayweather, Hatton’s chin became dented and like many fighters, he suffered the psychological ramifications of being knocked out. The confidence of an undefeated fighter is something that should not be downplayed ---we all know boxing is an extremely mental sport. On top of having been beaten and knocked out prior to facing Pacquiao, Hatton fought a moronic fight and any fighter who is looking to be knocked out as quickly as possible should study his performance and us it as a blueprint. It’s much easier to beat a fighter who has already been knocked out and lost his 0 than it is to be the one who accomplished that. In closing, Pacquiao is an excellent, exciting fighter who has improved a lot over the past few years. He’s great for boxing, but is slightly overrated and assuming that Mayweather is the same fighter he was before he retired, he’ll defeat Pacman and reclaim his #1 P4P throne.
Pac has always been underrated. It seems now that he beat Hatton he is finally getting his just dues. The man was already an incredible fighter. Its been a long time coming, and I'm glad I was one of those who saw it coming.
The manner of Pacquiao's victories have been asonishing. Larry Merchant said it in commentary - what we saw against Oscar was the last thing anybody expected to see. Incredible. So people, me included, said Oscar was a dead man walking. Then Pacquiao goes in against a live body in one of the world's most dominant champions at a weight that IS to big for him. And he looked even better.
Unfair! That's a pretty well thought out critique, if innacurate. It's not like "lol, pac blows lol" or anything like that.
It's not an excuse, it's an analysis. Also, anybody who thinks that Mayweather has a big size advantage over Floyd is wrong. There's a 2 inch difference in height, and Floyd could probably still make 140 or 142lbs. I don't see why weight is even brought up because Floyd himself moved up from 130 over the years and comes into the ring weighing around 150lbs (the same as Pac give or take a pound) The biggest difference is not height or weight, but reach. Mayweather has a 26 inch arm length which is the same as Wladamir Klitschko believe it or not. See my other thread for a head to head analysis of this potential fight.
Thank you. I don't think some people even bother reading what others write. I'm glad that there are others like yourself that do.
Yeah, the brutal KO from Floyd dented Hatton's chin forever. Sorry, you may have put a lot of time and thought into your analysis, but, it's still nothing more than an excuse to make Mayweather look good. Pac absolutely crushed Hatton with that shot, and if he hit anyone else with that punch, they would surely crumble as well.
that's why Pac should fight a live underdog. somebody who hasn't been knocked out. That would be Joan Guzman, Timothy Bradley and Edwin Valero at 140.
I don't agree with saying beating a fighter that's already lost his 0 is easier. I don't think Pacquiao would be as successful as he is today had he not lost to Morales (and his other 2 defeats), and even though he didn't lose, he had those super close fights with JMM. I know that made him better. It might not be the case with Hatton but it's not a general rule.
That's not fair, I never said he hasn't had a great career and I gave him respect, I just think that people are slightly overrating him and not really looking more deeply into certain things. If he beats Mayweather, I will elevate him to the God status that some people have already elevated him to.
