Does the fact that we all (or most of us anyway) spend more time talking about a fight that never was than anything else prove that Pacquiao and Mayweather are bigger than the sport of boxing?

    Also:

Mosley and Berto, two of the best fighters in the world, are fighting for far less than the amounts being talked about for the bout between Pac/PBF. Apparently Berto's fighting for $1m!

The disparity between what the very top fighters earn and what even boxers as good as Mosley earn, never mind the very bottom end of the scale, is huge and is probably detering up and coming fighters. Surely the purses need to be distributed more fairly to rejuvenate the sport!?

the heart and brain are the 2 most important things in your body..but if your liver, lungs, kidneys or anything else fails,...its over..so all are equally important

I agree. Great thread. This is the REAL reason UFC is gaining.

Boxing isn't dead by any stretch, but it is like a wine cellar with great vintages. The good stuff is bottled up and there are no new shipments coming in. Boxing is investing NOTHING into its future. :-(

UFC is like $10-20 bottles of wine. Sure it ain't good as the stuff in the wine cellar, but it is pretty damn good and you have a steady supply of it coming in. Also, you have tons of new producers in the area developing new wines.

Like it or not, casual fans are what keep a sport afloat. Diehards need to start welcoming these people in and educating them. People in the industry need to start treating the boxers right.

    Yeh, all good stuff.

Something needs to be done though. UFC is the most uncultured 'sport' I've ever seen and it would be very sad if it takes over from boxing.

The Pac/PBF debacle has not helped things because it will **** off the casual fans!

You know it is crazy because I keep trying to not let myself call UFC "uncivilized" or "uncultured". I LOVE it as a sport, but the whole package just makes my skin crawl. And I mean no offense to a UFC lover, but IMHO it exudes a constant heavy dose of aggression, arrogance, anti-intellectualism, and racism.

Boxing is more "Here is the sport love it for what it is no matter your background. Here we are on common ground." I do still feel there is a healthy dose of racism/nationalism/classism in boxing, but boxnig has been around long enough for everyone to feel comfortable mingling together.

IMHO the problem with UFC is that marketing has just over evolved for it. It is being sold as a "lifestyle" and not a sport. If you don't like blaring power cords and roars, t-shirts covered in skulls, and tattoos you are kind of left scratching your head.

Boxing really just needs a governing body on the national and/or world level. As long as you have these isolated groups state athletic commissions and promotional stables you will get everyone playing to their own selfish interests against each other. A group that can step in and settle crap like this.

UFC is gaining b/c the average person can identify with them. Your average beer drinker thinks that its cool to see a glorified bar fight. Not to mention that there arent a lot of great white american fighters in boxing. YOur average NASCAR fan would rather see a guy they can identify with

I completely agree with you. I kind of address that in my follow up post.
