Manny Pacquiao gave Fredrick Lawson a sampling of what to expect in the coming days yesterday, turning the unbeaten Ghanian into a bewildered amateur in their first sparring session at Wild Card Gym in Gen. Santos City.
After taking on local middleweight Marlon Alta for two rounds, Pacquiao decided to let Lawson (21-0, 19 KOs) prove his mettle in the next two rounds.
Lawson got a rude awakening, according to Filipino trainer Nonoy Neri.
With Pacquiao, preparing for his showdown with Brandon Rios on Nov. 24 in Macau, on attack mode, Lawson was reduced to a cowering, covering partner.
“He (Lawson) doesn’t know what to do when Manny rained punches on him,” said Neri, who bared that Pacquiao also did his early morning run and underwent isometrics in the afternoon.

Pac and Canelo both know how to kick some sparrring partner ass!

I wonder if this means Rios will school Pac the way Mayweather schooled Canelo......

There are always rumors before any big fight about sparring. However, some are true, but sparring and an actual fight are two different things. Vlad did knock Wilder down with a jab, out classed him badly. Vlad has mentioned fighting Wilder fairly soon. Perhaps next after the Povetkin fight?

The likes of Pac will always toy with their sparring partners if they decide to give it a go.
It's part of the strategy. It's confidence building. You don't want your fighter overly cautious and gun shy when the actual fight happens because he got countered bad during training by some sparring partner.

Exactly. They pick guys that are easier versions of the opponent. You don't want guys who are able to land much on your fighter. You want his brain in top condition when the fight hits. You occasionally want to mix in someone a little more high caliber, but not that often.

I know it's slightly off topic but you seen the Chavez Jr - Golovkin spar? In was back in late 2010 at Wild Card. GGG was basically unknown, an interim title holder based in Europe. Chavez Jr was having a big media workout day for what was supposed to be his 'step-up' fight.

He was basically made to look foolish against this unknown Kazakh on his own media workout.

The step-up fight didn't happen (Jr got 'ill') and an easier opponent was found for the following month.

Just an example of sparring going 'wrong'. Horribly so, in this case, 'cos all the media was there. It's been buried 'til a few days ago.

haha. Goes to show you why they don't go looking for guys that will give their fighter to tough of a time. Good story though, didn't know the history.

    This is the guy:

    [yt]hJsnrnwG4NI[/yt]

That is probably Lawson's biggest step up to date, a former champ (twenty years ago) turned whipping dummy who nowadays jobs to everything from A to B and C level talents.

However, Lawson is the only guy to ever stop him in Kotey's very long career...and he went the distance with the likes of Victor Ortiz, Juan Manuel Marquez, Acelino Freitas, Toño Diaz, prime 140lb Jose Cotto, Guty Espadas Jr., Anthony Peterson, and Orlando Salido.

So this Lawson might be somewhat legit - but for a slew of cliched but valid reasons ("styles make fights", "it's only sparring", "he never fought anybody half this good before" etc) too much shouldn't be read into roughing him up.
