hahaha you werent even born when Leonard fought. Lets see, he eat Benitez, Lost to Duran, was losing to Hearns pulled it out, lost the rematch. Beat Duran "no mas" but very close fight. All at WW. Then waited for Hagler (He admitted this) defeated him controversially. Thats about that. Why dont you ask Duran why hes ranked above Ray when he lost most of his biggest fights? Or for that matter, shouldnt Armstrong be lower than Ray? He certainly didnt beat those names that SRL beat. Why is it hes always ahead of Leonard? You know lets say that Gallos overrating Manny. Why does it matter? Either way he obviously is clearly still ahead of Floyd and thats important because theyre from the same generation.
I think Armstrong's skillset is very underrated. The man was more than just "come forward and punch". He would have got KTFO more often than not if that was the case. His skills are very very good. The man was a phenomenon. That doesn't take anything away from Pac.
:good It is really funny we have these ESBr geniuses who just saw highlight clips and think they knew it better than guys who existed back then and knew exactly what happened and how it was back then.
well there were probably alot of diverging opinions back then as well. It's not like every boxing fan today has the same opinion about today's fighters. Same way you could get one guy who was around back then who thought Armstrong would just "bury his head into his opponent’s chest, firing lefts and rights to the body and head" while another would think something completely different. Just cause one guy or a couple of guys from that era say something doesn't mean that they know better. It's just an opinion like any other.
Ricky Hatton was a champion in his prime coming off a win over Pauli Malignaggi...I think that qualifies as a good win. Miguel Cotto was a prime champion(albeit a war weary one) coming off of a fresh win over a VERY tough and game Joshua Clottey.
You can be a swarmer AND a thinking, deliberate puncher Armstrong put pressure on and threw alot of punches but he picked the right spots nonetheless and was very intelligent about how he applied pressure.
Henry Armstrong has 3 titles in 3 of the original 8 weight classes. Manny Pacquiao has 4 titles in 4 of the original 8.
Look Im a casual boxing fan now since the HWs scene has been dead. Ive been watching MMA more. But Pac and Floyd and this potential matcup has gotten me back. But FFS this aint that complicated. I can argue that Duran has beaten Ray and besides that his next biggest win is De Jesus but I wont go on bitching why hes ranked so high. Because this is the same guy from LW who beat an up and comer LMW Davey Moore in 84 (sounds familiar) no one thought hed pull that one out. Then he went on to beat Iran Bakley at MW another bigger guy who many thought would beat him (sounds familiar again?) And now you ask, why is he higher than SRL?? Well, its right in front of our eyes what hes done.
It is no secret that a fighter's achievements gets greater as it ages, especially when the main evidences that the younger public see are mostly summary clips that highlight the fighter's greatest moments, whereas shortcomings are ignored. So I would put weight on the opinion of people who actually existed across eras than the ones who only saw past fighters on clips, and at a tender age when they are barely able to make fair judgments and most vulnerable to making superficial impressions.
Youtube moron look it up/ Uhh he beat all of these fighters. He lost the rematch to Hearns when he was past his prime and so was Hearns. What the hell does losing have to do with anything. Pacquiao got his ass beaten by a faded Morales, and got 2 extremely close decisions with Juan Manuel Marquez. Neither are anywhere near the league of a Duran or Hearns. Boy you really are stupid. Not just in the boxing sense but in the entire your intelligence isnt very ****ing high sense. Because Duran shouldnt even have been able to survive in the ring wth the likes of a Hearns, Hagler, Leonard or Benitez. Let alone beat 1 of them and give another, a top 3 middleweight of all-time all he could handle. And he had an entire division on complete lockdown for a decade. When has pacquiao ever dominated one division? Lets see, Henry Armstrong beat 16 world champions, more then Leonard, beat Barney Ross who is higher on the ATG list then everyone with maybe the exception of Duran, held 3 titles at the same time in 3 divisions AND was robbed of the middleweight title while weighing 140lbs(he didnt need a catchweight to do it). He did it legitly fighting the best in the division. Not the 5th best ala Margarito or Cotto. Thats the thing Manny is so-called top 10 ATG by you *******s, yet most would still pick Floyd to beat him. Hell Floyd will be 2-1 favorite on fight night. Nobody was picking agaisnt Leonard or Armstrong in their primes against anyone.
Having a better resume doesn't exactly make you the better fighter head to head. I think that's what Gallo's implying. Just saying.
Even a convincing win over Mayweather wont put him in that echelon IMO. He will be pushing for top10 status if he does that...but Armstrong is a lock as it comes for top 5 and in a lot ways there is a pretty big gap between those guys and the blokes who round out many people's top 10.
