i currently rate Mayweather higher on the strength of his victories coming over guys coming off impressive wins compared to Pacquiao fighting guys coming off impressive losses, saying that I think if Manny can beat say a Crawford or Garcia-Thurman winner I'd probably put him ahead

ATG rankings are quite subjective, so I can understand why some people think Manny is already ahead of Mayweather Jr in the rankings.

On the flip side, I can see why Mayweather would be lauded as the greatest fighter of his era and several notches above Pacman in the ATG rankings. The criteria varies greatly and there's a good amount of subjectivity to it.

You can't just use the idea that FLoyd beat Pacman so that should automatically put FLoyd ahead of him. Saddler beat the great Willie Pep several times and I don't know anyone who would rank Sandy ahead of Willie.

Personally, I have Mayweather in my top 20 and Pacman hovering inside my top 25. I have my reasons for ranking FLoyd so highly, but it mainly includes the notion that he's a fighter who would've been dominant in any era, has the look of a 15 round fighter, his all around skills are second to none, and at the lighter weights when he was devoid of any injuries going into a fight, he was a bad man and a nightmare stylistically for pretty much any ATG fighter stationed between 130 to 140 lbs.

It takes hypothetical matches like him against Hearns and Leonard and Robinson for people to pick against him confidently. Essentially ATG fighters 4 divisions north of where he started from. That should put things into its proper perspective.

 

Pep would be favored at 130. Saddler would be favored at 130. Duran favored at 135. Chavez favored at 130 or 135 or 140.

I mean if floyd goes life and death with Castillo can you imagine what great oressure fighters like Chavez and Duran would do?

 

Margarito is a legend. Came up the hard way. Was fighting grown men at 15 years old. That didn't bother him though. He would go toe to toe with anybody. No quitting, no denying. A true FIGHTER.

 

And he couldn't beat anybody notable after being exposed a cheat!! Just coincidence right? He fights bums now at his level.

Cotto STILL couldn't legitimately beat Tony in the rematch, even though he only had sight in one eye from round 2. Wasn't till Tony started to come on & Cotto started wilting that the NY doc stopped the fight.
The only fights Ive seen Tony legitimately lose since Ive known him were to Pacquaio & to Paul Williams in a close decision. Don't get me started on Steroid Shane Mosely !!!
