Pacquiao has lost something since the Cotto fight, but I think it's as much (or more) of a mental thing than a physical thing. He doesn't seem like a killer in there anymore. I can't imagine Lampley talking about Pacquiao now, saying how he wants to hurt his opponent because that opponent didn't think he could do it (like you hear Lamps say in Pac-Morales III).
IMO he's not on the decline. He's just too uncomfortable with styles of JMM. But relax, there are 4-out-of-10 boxers in the World that has these JMM-like skills. Can you name a few? PBF,JMM,Hops, what else?
So the trend nowadays is that if Pac couldn't KO his opponents, he's declining but when he does KO his opponent, he's on roids. tsk tsk tsk. Pac hasn't declined. He showed he could box against JMM and was able to make JMM look bad because he got outboxed by Pac. Personally, Pac is still improving.
Pac resorted to counter punching the counter puncher coz his offense has been negated by JMM's footwork and timing. Even though he has successes on his offense, JMM's plan turned out to be effective. JMM at some point succeeds on his strategy and minimized getting him on the exchanges, which is Pacman's forte.
no. he's lost a bit of speed but that's due to the extra weight....he just fought 2 guys back to back that didn't fight in the typical style that he looks good against. you watch, he's going to steamroll Bradley and everyone will say "he's back!" despite him never leaving and it just being based on styles why he didn't look great recently.
that's more like it. his focus is now diluted because of many commitments, politics, showbiz, etc... and maybe the motivation.. he has achieve already beyond his expectations.
He's not prime, but I wouldn't say he's declining. Most people cite the Hatton and Cotto fights as being his peak or "prime" (or perhaps the Dela Hoya fight also), but I find it hard to believe that a prime only lasts 1 year. Pac fought to an incredibly close fight with JMM a few months prior to Dela Hoya and in his most recent fight (4 years later) fought in another close fight with JMM (which, although the 2nd fight was controversial, was even more controversial). So not too much has changed in the past 4 years. Obviously age, politics, and the fact that he's been in the game now for 4 more years. So certainly not at his peak or prime. Although I see this version of Pac doing similar damage to the opponents he faced pre-Mosley. Maybe not to the same extent, but to a similar extent. Mosley fought to survive and showed a little movement, JMM is his kryptonite. Match Pac up with the right style and he'll look like a god again.
He's absolutely declined. It's obvious. Guys that age (and especially smaller fighters) in the game for that long, who have been in wars, tend to burn out relatively early. Really, it's amazing that he was great as he was at 29-30. He's clearly past it now and while I've always believed Mayweather would beat him, that fight no longer would be competitive. Floyd is declined, too, but he makes fewer mistakes and has aged better.
