PACQUIAO DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT SWITCH TO SHOWTIME

Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao didn't know about the switch to Showtime from HBO Sports when news of the deal first broke.

In an interview with the Inquirer and ABS-CBN's Dyan Castillejo at his congress office earlier this week, Pacquiao was surprised when asked for his reaction on the move to the larger CBS Network organization which has an audience of some 115 million.

It took Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz to brief him on the switch and to basically explain the advantages of moving to CBS which owns Showtime and would help enhance his image as a crossover star while also giving his wife Jinkee a chance to appear on CBS shows.

Pacquiao's immediate reaction after the briefing by Koncz was "that's good" noting that HBO Sports had a base of only 26 million.

In a joint official announcement in New York, Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Showtime Sports and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said the Showtime Networks Inc. and CBS have joined forces with Top Rank, Inc. to promote, produce and distribute the biggest boxing event of the year, the showdown between pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 7.

The agreement effectively brings together Pacquiao, the top athlete and personality in the sport, with SHOWTIME, the fastest growing premium television network in the U.S., and its parent company CBS Corporation whose programming and media assets span network and local television, pay and basic cable, radio, outdoor and online.

The announcement said the campaign will include the SHOWTIME Sports documentary series FIGHT CAMP 360° in preview of Pacquiao vs. Mosley which would replace HBO's 24/7 series. The top rated CBS Television Network will participate by broadcasting a primetime special of the show in April.

Pacquiao who appeared on the top-rated CBS show "60 Minutes" prior to the fight against Antonio Margarito which also featured US President Barack Obama proved to be a hit.

"The arrangement with CBS and Showtime regarding the promotion and distribution of the Pacquiao vs. Mosley championship event represents a new opportunity for the sport of boxing. It enables boxing to reach millions more people in the United States given the reach of CBS, the most watched television network in the country. This development will not only benefit Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley but all of the young men participating in the sport of boxing," said Arum.

Hershman said, "We look forward to combining Showtime Sports’ production and distribution expertise with Top Rank's promotional power and the amazing programming and marketing resources available to us across CBS to present the biggest boxing event of 2011."

On May 7, Pacquiao will fight under the SHOWTIME PPV banner for the first time, bringing it the highest profile and biggest revenue generating athlete in boxing whose fights over the past two years have garnered nearly 4 million pay per view buys and unrivaled box office receipts. The event marks the first SHOWTIME PPV event since 2005’s Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo II.

“Pay per view has been an opportunistic play for SHOWTIME Sports in recent years,” Hershman continued. “In Pacquiao, we have a global celebrity and unquestionably the most popular boxer of this era attempting to continue his dominance in the ring against Shane Mosley, one of the most talented and recognizable fighters of today not named Manny Pacquiao. With this marquee match up, Pacquiao’s proven track record in pay per view and CBS’s participation, this is the perfect opportunity for Showtime to be back in the pay per view business and in a big way.”

Showtime has a long history of success in pay per view dating back to the 1990s. In 1997, the SHOWTIME PPV presentation of Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield II garnered the most pay per view buys for any sport or entertainment event in history. The 1.99 million buys stood as the industry benchmark for nearly 10 years, until being surpassed in May 2007.

if he knew **** and ran his on show..he wouldnt be fighting a washed up 40 year old who hasnt won in 2 years and was shut out by floyd....
plus hes in congress now, and none of them no ****

  4. I don't think Pacquiao cares that much honestly. He trusts his promoter to make the biggest $$ deal for him as possible, and even if Arum didn't call Manny up and be like "Yo Manny how's Showtime in stead of HBO?" Arum clearly made a good choice. Manny has a bunch of other **** to pay attention to.

He better pay attention to everyone around him who are milking his ass. Yes he can make 15 million but he has to pay a % to GBP, Top Rank, Roach, Koncz (which I don't know why he is still around) and other business managers and that 15 million turns into 4 or 5 million! Manny signs and agrees with everything put in front of him!

yeah, manny should not worry about boxing stuff....hes got alot more important stuff to think about
if he cared about his legacy, beating up a guy who couldnt beat sergio mora in his last fight and lost 11 of 12 rounds to mayweather? and who is months away from being 40? this is the most pointless fight of the last few years for anyone...

Manny will beat Mosley and they will say he is the greatest who just beat another all time great in Mosley. They are just looking to put fighters wit names on his record to make it look good bc casual fans don't understand the fact that Mosley is 10 yrs past his prime.

He better not fire Koncz. Konc is that type of character that will do an interview on CNN or write a book about things that when on in the Pacquiao camp and tell all the dirt to make money. He tried to get Manny to get rid of Roach as well in the past. LMAO!

Can't really knock there system since Pac has grown into a star under it. I just hope that when he is done with boxing we don't find out that he ended up being bankrupt and broke because they put stuff in the contracts he is signing to steal the majority of his money.

You would think though that they would have discussions with Manny before making it official though. If Manny is that out of the loop of deals going down with his name attached to it then in the wrong hands that could turn very very bad for him.

This just confirms my belief that Pac's team leave him out of the loop. That was probably the biggest obstacle with making the Floyd fight too cause all we heard was conflicting agreed upon cut off dates with regards to the Mayweather fight. Pac himself was saying up until the fight then we hear Koncz and Arum with 7 days and 14 days..... sounds like it's team Pac who really don't want the Mayweather fight and nothing to do with Pac himself which is what I've believed since last negotiations fell apart. These muther****ers are milking Pac for every dollar they can squeeze out of him and don't care about making the most challenging fights to enhance his legacy. Team Pac need some better communication, it seems like a buncha wolves just trying to make the most $ for themselves and not communicating with other members of team Pac, no one's ever on the same page and we always get different reports depending on who was interviewed (Pac, Koncz, Arum, Roach)
