Pacquiao Improves on Mayweather's Peformance vs Mosley

That's right. Shane didn't feel he needed to retreat against Mayweather. Shane did feel he needed to retreat last night, especially after the third round.

It was either "Clottey Mode" or KO loss. Shane chose the former.

 

And what was the result for Mosley? Playing defense doesn't earn you points.

Which is why I, and Al Bernstein, have been saying the same thing: Unless Floyd can hurt Pacquiao and knock him out, Floyd isn't likely to win the fight -- even if he makes Manny miss 1000 punches.

Why? Because Pacquiao's output is greater than Floyd's. Judges usually go for fighters that actually throw punches and press the fight. Pacquiao does this, and he did it last night. Even though he may have looked "bad," he shut Mosley out, basically.

Floyd isn't going to out-throw Pacquiao. Nobody believes that. Which means Pacquiao banks rounds, which means Floyd needs to drop or stop Pacquiao to win the bout.

This isn't complicated. It's not. You mention Marquez and Morales: Both of them put themselves in the danger zone to try to score points and win rounds. And both paid the price. And both lost (Morales two out of three times; Marquez earned one draw in two fights with Pac).

If Floyd can't hurt Pacquiao -- and especially if he doesn't even open-up and try to hurt Pacquiao -- he's not winning the fight. Based upon the Cotto fight, the fight that scared the hell out of Team Mayweather, it's no longer clear that Mayweather can seriously hurt Pacquiao or hurt Pacquiao enough to make Pacquiao respect his power. Ditto the Pac-Margo fight, the Pac-Clottey fight and the Pac-Mosley fight.

Pacquiao can take a punch. Could Floyd hurt him?

I doubt we'll ever find out.
