Plyometrics not for Pacquiao SPORTS medicine specialist Dr. Tyrone Reyes said he is happy that the use of plyometrics as part of the training regimen of Manny Pacquiao has been stopped after the Filipino boxing icon felt sore and sluggish and was forced to skip jogging for a day or two. In a telephone conversation with www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports, Reyes said he believes plyometrics has a very little role in boxing. He said it would be good for a sudden burst for jumping, which is used in basketball, which may be a good thing. “But that method is mainly for lower extremity muscles, mainly in the legs. The explosive movement that you make can, in fact, be dangerous because you can get injured. Injuries for plyometrics are quite high,” said Reyes. Reyes said he was glad when he read that plyometrics was taken out of Pacquiao’s program. “I had my doubts right from the beginning when they said they were going to use it. I asked then, for what?” The sports medicine specialist added: “It didn’t look like it was appropriate for Pacquiao or for any boxer for that matter.” At the same time, Reyes said plyometrics may have been right for someone who trained almost strictly by plyometrics for a while. “But for someone like Pacquiao, who is also doing other types of training, especially the endurance kind of training that he does, this is an additional burden and he was bordering on over-training. I am glad that they took it out.” Nutrition expert Dr. Sanirose Orbeta said she was hoping that Pacquiao will go into the fight against Oscar de la Hoya on fight night at around 146-147 pounds, which would be ideal and which trainer Freddie Roach is aiming for. Ronnie Nathanielsz http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=sports3_nov25_2008 -------------------------- Not sure how much truth there is in that (i mean..nothing official came from pacquiao's camp) but even still...its interesting to read that when a video of him doing plyometrics is on the net. And while that second video in this topic looks very energetic..i cant imagine how much damage its doing to your knees. Doing it once or twice is fine..but implementing it into your workout? My knees couldnt take that.
Yes but if its true that the pacquiao camp DID stop the plyometrics (and ive read a few more reports which seem to indicate that)..then Dr Reyes's opinion doesnt matter...because he was commenting AFTER pacquiao's own camp pulled him out of doing plyometrics.
The reason is kinda silly. Plyometrics are very taxing to the body and require recovery time. You can't just add them to an already stressing workout.
Basically they are just saying that he was doing too much volume leading up to a fight and didn't want him to burn out. When they weighed everything up: Sparring Pad Work Bag Work Speed Ball Work Double End Work Shadow Boxing Running Circuit Training Plyometrics They just got rid of the least important thing. Plyometrics didn't stop him running, it just meant that he was too tired to run the following day as his volume was exceeding his effective recovery.
