Is there any fighter out there who has more excuses made for him than Cotto? It's ridiculous. This guy has a golden opportunity here that is only being given to him because he and Pac have the same promoter. Despite this, both he and his fans seem intent on making as many excuses as possible before the fight even happens. This bull**** about the weight and the title is completely ridiculous. The fact that Cotto actually tried to not put his title on the line is absurd. Cotto is a WW champion who begged for this fight against a JWW and now he wants to complain about the weight. It doesn't work like that Cotto. 145 lbs. is more than fair. There is absolutely no reason that a 5' 6" 1/2 WW can't make 145 lbs. without much trouble. Bernard Hopkins was in a similar situation when he fought Hoya. Hoya demanded a catchweight of 158 lbs. in that fight. Hopkins agreed, weighed in at 156 lbs., and put all 4 of his belts on the line. Now if a 6' 1" career MW(who by all rights could've easily been fighting at LHW) can fight at 158 lbs., why the hell can't Cotto fight at 145 lbs.? Let's also not forget that the last time an elite WW fought the top JWW, everyone bitched and complained that the fight WASN'T fought at a catchweight. The bottom line is that this a great fight, and the catchweight is more than fair. I can understand Cotto wanting as many advantages as possible, but the stunt he pulled with the belt was petty and uncalled for. If Pac wins, there should be no excuses. Cotto is getting a shitload of money, and has a chance to significantly boost his standing in the sport. The two lbs. is not a big deal. He needs to suck it up, put his paper title on the line, and get to work.
Man stfu. Cotto did not beg for a Pacquiao fight. It was the other way around when Pacquiaio was the one that demand Arum to make the Cotto fighter after Cotto beat Clottey. Cotto from the beggining said the Pacquiao would interested in him but that don't mean he beg for it.
:good good point.. a paper title he won from michael jennings If he wants the title so bad, pac can dump it after he wins and cotto can fight jennings again for the wbo title:nut
You don't nothing about how Hopkins vs De la hoya happen. De la hoya had said from the beginning he wouldn't fight Hopkins at 160 pounds cause it be too big for him but Hopkins was the one that said he wants to fight De la hoya. Hopkins called out De la hoya many freaking times. Also it was Hopkins idea to fight at a catch weight cause he knew Oscar will accept in which Oscar did.
That was EXACTLY what I was going to say. Does it make sense to fight for a weight division belt, when you are limited to fighting below the true weight limit of that division? It makes no sense. If the contract doesn't allow him to weigh in up to 147lbs, then how is this a true welterweight championship fight?
cotto should have dumped that WBOgus belt a long time ago..its the least credible belt out there especially when he won it against someone like jennings.
If losing 2 pounds to make 145 pounds is not a big deal then why not fight at 147 pounds? Cotto will still weigh around 160 pounds on fight night even if it's at 145 pounds right? So whats the problem of the fight not be at 147 pound limit?
OH? didn't cotto offered his willingness to fight PAC @145 weight in an interview after pac's win over hatton. pac just indicated to arum his willingness to square off with cotto when pac was at ringside on cott/clottey fight? Pac demanded 143 but eventually conceded to 145. cotto weighed 146 against clottey of which i haven't heard any difficulty of him making that weight. 4 months for a young fighter to cut 1lb from his most recent weight is chicken.:rasta So, there should be no excuses. This is fair.:happy As regards to catchweight, this is not the first time that a title fight will happen at catchweight. Pac is not a natural welter who just wanted to challenge a prime, true welter champion and asking for just 1lb concession is more than fair as compared to 10-15 lbs that he will concede to cotto on fight night.:happy
I'm sure Cotto can make the weight... that shouldn't be a concern for us boxing fans. Our concern should be that the WBO is making a 147 title fight WITHOUT it being at 147. That's like a math teacher giving you a spanish exam and giving you a grade on math...
he can gamble on the money part and just pay the excess 2 pounds (or 1 pound if we would base it on the clottey fight) and come in with as much size advantage as possible and hope to beat pac. after that, his marketability would rise and demand much higher purse.
