I have no problem on Pacs facing other champs at 135lbs or fighting hatton at 140lbs. But I prefer hatton for the belt in another division (if hatton beat malignaggi). Pac can always go back to lightweight division after the fight.

Pac will eventually fight the other top dogs @ 135, he wants to fight hatton because he has the balls to do so and actually believes that he can beat him. The money aspect is no longer a question... No one should diss pac for wanting to fight hatton.

Right now, I only can find two fighting champions in boxing: Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto.

and, money is no problem for pac. everytime pac fights, there is always money.

    manny = money

that's how promoters and advertisers see it.

very good post. The thing is I am not blaming Pac, Hatton, or their promoters for making the choices they make. I am just saying that it annoys me that "From a boxing perspective unifying at 135 and then going up to fight Hatton makes boxing sense but not boxing cents." I wish those 2 would coincide every time. Or that at least boxing was organised in such a way that it doesn't matter what makes the most money, its what makes the most boxing sense that matters.

Imagine a world where the Spurs make it to the NBA finals, but the championship is still played between the Lakers and the Celtics because it makes more money.

Brilliant post, though for me the idea of Calzaghe v Jones Jr is far more repulsive than Pacquiao v Hatton. At least the latter would be competitive, Jones Jr hasn't legitimately beaten a live, high level opponent in 5 years. Thank God for guys like Cotto & Marquez who chase the best around to prove themselves.

No matter how amazing Pac's body is, no matter how much of a freak he is, its VERY hard to go up at 140 THEN go back down at 135.

You can't just go up 5 pounds then immediately force your body to go back down 5 pounds(mind you that this is after a very tough fight), and still expect to perform 100%.

you have a very legit point! :good

Pac should fight guzman/nate winner first... but if he fights hatton that's fine with me.

The problem being its a great fight Pac / Hatton, thats why there is so much weight on it, its mouth watering to us, to Pac, to Hatton, so therefore its being leaned on. The rest everyone else has touched on and pointless going into again, its the bottom line......

Maybe, you make valid points as a loss to either Campbell or Guzman would dampen a possible Hatton-Pac fight.

    To the topic:
I see no travesty in picking Hatton over Campbell, as either fight would be historically significant for Pac. A Hatton-Pac fight would be a HUGE EVENT, bottom line is Hatton brings more to the plate than Campbell. According to Maestro Hatton is no walk in the park, you guys make it sound like Hatton is a cake walk. Pac beat David Diaz, impressively, but it's David Diaz.

People are always complaining about boxing is dying, but a Hatton-Pac fight would be a HUGE mainstream fight and would pull in the interest of a casual fan.

P4P where would you guys rank Campbell and Hatton?

One more thing, if and that's a big if, Pac beats Hatton that would definitely amplify a possible fight between Campbell/Guzman. I would even rather see Guzman get a shot at Pac as he's been chasing him for awhile now, and according to the "experts" provides more challenge to Pac.

I disagree that Hatton brings more to the plate than Campbell. Campbell just beat Juan Diaz who was tearing through the division and is on a hot streak while Hatton is coming off a loss and a poor performance and is on a cold streak. What Hatton brings more of to the plate is money. Hatton is no walk in the park but that is not the point right now. The point is that the fighters who are earning it fight each other.

Hatton-Pac would be a huge mainstream event and its good to turn eyes towards the sport in the short run but its bad for the integrity of the sport itself. IMO Pac vs Hatton can still happen in 9-15 months time, and if one of them loses in the meantime then its a sign that the fight wasn't meant to be.

excellent post sadly boxing has become a popularity contest and the fights that are "right" aren't always made. hell i would love to see pac fight cambell but if he fights hatton which i don't think he will yet ,i'll watch for sure. all i want is to see competitive fights not a guy on top moving up to fight the bottom of other divisions. pac put up a good showing but lets get real he fought a guy who looked like he was dipped in liquid plastic and it was hardening during the fight. diaz made micky ward look fast. man do i wish kostya was 8 years younger and he would show pac what fast accurate punching feels like. not that i don't like pac but i think he hasn't really been tested too hard other than marquez and imho pac lost both times.

I know you read the board before the Diaz-Campbell fight. So in that token Hatton is one impressive win away from being an ATG again.

I disagree, Hatton provides so much more. He provides a big event, a name, legacy, a great following, and money. This is a package deal wrapped and bow tied for Pac, if he wins. I've never seen Hatton fight in a non-sold out arena.

Lastly, I feel a loss to Hatton will not effect a possible fight with Guzman/Campbell as far as clamor but not vice versa. Unless Pac totally gets blown out.

P4P how would you rank Campbell and Hatton?

We'll see how it plays out.
