Pacquiao vs. Hatton in LV - makes no sense. But Dubai? WTF?

To stage a fight in a country that has little to do to with either fighters and boxing is in the 'other sports' section. PacMan could pack a Manila or General Santos City stadium, as well as Hatton could pack the Wembley. 90.000 vs. 15.000 happy fans paying, where 10.000+ are internationally traveling supporters in a bad economy. Unfortunately, the average people in this part of the world doesn't care about professional boxing anymore (other than the great Latino community), and only the stupid casino fee and the $300k in Bob Arum's pocket keep these two famous gladiators in a small town coliseum. What a small-timer thinking!

My point: an event as big as this with two countries and millions of fans belongs to either Manny Pacquiao's or Ricky Hatton's huge backyard, and don't come with the romantic 'Mecca of Boxing' tale because half-empty arenas speak about another story unfortunately.

What do you think: does this ultimately INTERNATIONAL event with a Filipino and a British fighter fighter for the top of the world belong to a huge stadium with 90.000 screaming fans, or should the fans travel across half of the world to a much smaller arena, because indeed, LV is still the place where it should be?

Las Vegas is nothing like Mecca when it comes to boxing.

People flock to Mecca in their millions.

I can't think of any other sports that stage the biggest events far away from where the people who actually want to watch them are.

If fighters like Pac and Hatton who both have massive fan bases can't keep a fight away from Vegas then theres no hope for anyone else.

  4. Agreed - no sense for it to be LV - i'm from Stoke in the UK, and would love to watch this fight, yet if it's LV, it'll be a case of waiting for 4am to watch a fight that has no affiliation with the States.

Hatton/Manny at Wembley would sell out faster than it would in the states, and it'd be a momentous occasion... Hell - even Manila would be at least understandable!!! :(

  5. Hasnt the Superbowl been held in the UK for the last 3+ years or something?

    No it hasn't.

One regular season match out of 256 has been staged at Wembley in each season.

  8. No way in hell would Manny go to the UK to fight in Hattons backyard, the fight will probaly go the full 12, and Paq WILL NOT get the nod from the judges in a close fight..:nono
Vegas is the logical choice:deal both guy's have been extremely successful fighting here, and it's a neutral site, i just hope the Brits and the Pinyos don't have a riot at the weigh in, or on fight night..
Besides i live here and i wanna see the fight live:hi:

Roach said Pac would fight Hatton in England. It probably would have happened if you guys didn't have the worst refs this side of Europe to choose from.

Lets not kid ourselves with all this "neutral territory" and "half way between the Phillipines and Britain" bull**** that Arum has been coming out with. This fight is in Vegas because of the money. Pure and simple.

as much as brits and pinoys want to see their fighters fight in front of their home, i agree that vegas would be the most neutral place to stage the fight. i admit that manila at this time has no financial capabilty to equal vegas' money making capacity while england, i'm afraid, is not agressive enough to get this fight from the clutches of TR and GBP.

If they would fight in England, the time of the fight would be problematic to rack up the highest amount of PPV revenues, which will come more from the States with it's population the equivalent of all of Europe...

i'm not saying you're wrong but Hatton-PBF got a million PPV buys in UK, surely Hatton-Pac won't get anywhere near that figure in the USA?

I think the location is down to the casino site fee, pure and simple.

You can still start the fight later in the night, as it happened before. And as you know, there were more UK PPV buys for Mayweather-Hatton despite the size of the US and Floyd being a young, charismatic, unbeaten American fighter, coming from a victory over Oscar Da La Hoya.
