    Being classy doesn't sell fights.

Hatton is loved by casual fans, they don't wanna see him get battered and they're hardly gonna want Pac to get battered, because he's humble and his life is a great story.

What Mayweather brought was the bad guy image which made people want Hatton to win even more and they wanted to see it happen.

Being very, very crude, Manny has the look of the bad guy (in the British psyche) for those of a certain age. But has a charm and respect that will help sell the fight to the next generation.

Those fancy who are under 25, who are not Hatton's followers, are not likely to buy the fight, no matter who the opponent, because boxing does not appeal to them, period.

I saw an opening with the "English not that good" comment and went for it....:p

I agree that a nice guy with limited English isn't going to be able to promote a PPV to casual fans to the same degree that Mayweather was able to.

I don't think it will come close to the Mayweather fight in UK PPV sales, that was a genuinely unique occasion. Probably the biggest buzz about a fight since Tyson-Bruno I.

Hatton is still very popular of course but he HAS lost a little of his lustre to the casual fan now the 0 has gone, especially the manner of the defeat.

Stab in the dark - I'll go for 750,000 which is still pretty incredible.

All that said, you never know, when the hype cranks up it may gather huge momentum.

Ricky will convince a lot of people that this is for the P4P title and that will lead to big sales in the UK. I'd be suprised if they aren't around 1m.

Where did you get 1.5m Uk PPV buys figure for Mayweather? I didn't know figures had been released and I'd be gobsmacked if there were this many.

Hatton vs Mayweather had much more for the casual fan:
    - Both unbeaten (someone's 0 had to go)
    - Good vs evil
    - Hatton at the peak of his popularity
    - Mayweather was the p4p number 1
    - England vs America
    - Hatton wanting to beat the **** out of mayweather
    - The intensity in the build-up

Whilst the Pacquiao vs Hatton fight has:
    - The potential to be a much better fight
    - Hatton has more of a chance in this fight
    - Both trainers exhanging verbal attacks

This is why I believe it won't get as many buys (lets not forget the economic situation), but it should because it seems like it will be a much better fight.

    Google it, it's true

Well actually my memory tells me 1.4m buys

Considering Oscar is the only non-heavy to ever break 2m in the states, and not by much either, it just shows how huge it was over here

Also so many people had house parties or pub lock ins, I watched it with 6 people, but we more than likely won't do it for this one. That probably means 6 buys instead of one...

It's crazy so many people bought that mismatch.

However...he lost. That probably means he'll lose a few viewers. Also I'd agree Pacquiao isn't going to win as many viewers as Mayweather did with his BS.

Still, I'd expect it to do solid numbers. If Mayweather did 1.4 I see this as 800k.

Without the 'charisma' of Mayweather Jr in this one, and the absence of the undefeated tag will undoubtedly lead to lower PPV sales. However, even in this time of credit crunch I expect the fight to do very well and sell close to a million buys.

Very much doubt it does better in the US than in the UK. One thing you neglect to mention in your Mayweather/Pacquiao comparison are the actual numbers they did against their common opponent, De La Hoya. Mayweather v DLH selling nearly twice as many PPVs as Pacquiao v DLH.

You also have to factor in that economic factors are likely to have an effect, but that this effect will be more pronounced on the American market than on the British market for the simple reason that HBO PPVs cost twice as much or more (depending on exchange rates) than SBO ones. Fifteen quid is not that much for a night in in front of the boxing especially if you get some mates involved - cheaper than going to the pub. Fifty dollars, on the other hand, is more of a hefty outlay.
