Pacquiao vs Margarito catchweight will be at 151lb according to Arum

There are already 17 divisons, there is very little need for catchweights. That's not even the real problem with this fight though. The problem is that neither one of them have any sort of credentials at 154, yet they are fighting for a vacant JMW belt. Neither one of them have any real credentials with the WBC in recent times either. I don't think Margo has ever won a WBC belt, and Pac hasn't won a real WBC belt since 2008. That's what really makes this "title fight" a joke.

 

IMO the reason why DLH decided to weigh so low was to make the re hydrated weight of 147. IMO DLH dropped down to 140 because he wanted to weigh low and hydrate back to 147 for the re hydration clause.

I already gave you the link for Cotto's fight night weigh in the other thread. I also don't believe they want people to know about the hydration clauses so they look to keep it on the hush.

But again if Margo comes in weighing as much as 158 I will admit I was wrong and I won't bring up it up again. But if he weighs in at 154 then thats to much of a coincidence for me.

You gave us a number but as yet no evidence that you didn't just make it up.

 

To be fair this is the belt that Sergio Martinez was awarded without having to fight for it, then allowed to hold it without defending it, then eventually vacated it after being champion for a year without having ever once been in a fight where the title was at stake.

The previous time it had been vacant it was won by Vernon Forest beating Carlos Baldomir, who was coming off a defeat at welterweight.

The vacancy before that was resolved by a fight between Ricardo Mayorga (coming off a defeat at middleweight) and Michele Piccirillo.

This is hardly a distingushed recent history that is being tarnished....

 

I dont like catchweights and i dislike this fight even less, why does this cheating scum bag get his chance like this?? Maybe cheato has a plan, look ordinary in the comeback, get roachs attention and get flagged as a waiting KO, make a catchweight fight just in case and bingo!! Damn, maybe cheato has a suprise up his sleeve

To a degree, I totally agreee. To me, this is just another fight. It's a vacant belt and everyone will KNOW that.

Seems posters are more concerned about the "history" Pac would make with another division belt.

Since there are literally 5 recognized belts in a division, there fight doesn't mean much in terms of it being legitimate.

That said, if EITHER wins and then defends the WBC belt successfully agsainst top guys, ONLY THEN is it legitimized.

 

Exactly!! POsters are worrying TOO much over the history of this belt right now. There really isn't any.

 

And yet, to *******s this will add to Pacquiao's legacy and mystique. History books do not show context. They only show (or will show) 8 different weight divisions. Since Margarito has a name, my son won't know that this was a sham like the Cotto farce and the Diaz debacle before it (until I explain of course).

I must admit, it's a smart (albeit cheap) way to build legacy, but if e.g. Mosley had done it, the fans would have his head. I guess we as fans have just come to expect better from fighters like Shane and Floyd.

Presumably you also have to explain about the achievements of the other people in these history books. I mean, he might see Oscar De La Hoya as a six weight champion until you explain that to get his middleweight title he had to cherrypick a paper champion and then rob him blind in some of the most obviously predetermined scoring ever seen. He might see Sugar Ray Leonard as a five weight champion until you explain how he won his super middleweight title and light heavyweight title in the same fight.

If people are worried about this issue, the time for concern was 30 years ago. Pacquiao is doing nothing different to other champions in the past 30 years.

Mosley used performance enhancing drugs. No, you're right, agreeing a contracted weight slightly less than the division limit is much worse....
