Can, and how, will Pacquiao win? In what fashion will Mayweather prove that he remains the best in the sport? The way Pacquiao dominated De la Hoya, we all wondered if Oscar had anything left. The quick dismantling of Hatton made some declare him shot, even though he was on a 2 fight win streak following his only defeat. Last night Pacquiao faced a solid welterweight, who was probably the most dangerous opponent Pacquiao has ever faced under the given circumstances. Pacquiao quickly made it apparent that he was the most dangerous fighter in the ring. Last night, Pacquiao left little doubt to whether or not he can be effective above 140lbs. Cotto did have success in the first round with his jab. Cotto did trouble Pacquiao with his movement late in the fight, particularly in one direction. Pacquiao seemed capable of cutting off the ring to one side, but merely followed Cotto when going to the other. Mayweather is now rust free, and ready to reclaim his spot atop the sport. Though Mayweather and Pacquiao are former 130lb titlists, Mayweather appears to be the larger fighter. Last night's fight commentary stated that Pacquiao must consume around 8,000 calories a day to keep his weight above 140 while training. Mayweather paid a hefty fine to avoid cutting weight in his bout with Marquez. Mayweather has a formidable jab when he decides to use it, and is very much capable of moving in the manner Cotto did last night. Mayweather's style is suited to face Pacquiao, but is it fool proof. Mayweather's guard will make it difficult to simultaneously defend against Pacquiao's wide left to the jaw and right hook to the temple. Last night, Pacquiao increased the intensity to take the fight from Cotto and produced a stoppage. Will Mayweather be able to capitalize on an aggressive Pacquiao and get a stoppage for himself? I want to know what you think.
I have not seen anything officially. I just don't think there is any way that it doesn't. I understand how the Cotto fight happened first. Arum promotes Cotto and Pacquiao, and knew it was a huge fight without having to split the promotional earnings. Now that Pacquiao and Cotto is out of the way, I don't see anything that can get in the way.
I have been away from the boards for a little because my computer crashed. I am back though. Anyway, Floyd has the style to beat Manny. Somebody who will let Manny throw his flurries and counter with sharp, quick and accurate shots stands a very good shot at beating Pac. Floyd has that style and also has the edge in handspeed (I think) which is key in beating Pac. Floyd is a completely different and superior fighter than Cotto, Hatton and old De La Hoya. He won't be an easy target like the above were and will make Manny pay dearly when he throws his flurries against Floyd. Floyd UD. Remote possibility of a late TKO
Pac was expected to beat Hatton and Cotto...I would not expect him to beat Mayweather. If Manny could do that it would be a very big, legacy defining win.
I'm in the minority, but I like Pacquiao. Before Floyd made his comeback, I assumed he would beat outbox Pacquiao. I changed my mind after I saw Floyd beat JMM (which is ironic, because a lot of fans went in the exact opposite direction). Floyd is beatable and Manny has the tools to do it, JMM did not. Even a slow, old, way out of his league (weight-wise) JMM was able to find the mark on Floyd. That Floyd was unable to seriously hurt JMM works into Pac's favor, especially that Manny proved he could absorb power from a strong welter. Pacquiao has great speed, good movement, and he fights very smart. Establishing his in and out rhythm against Floyd will be difficult as will dealing with Floyd's speed, defense, and impeccable counter-punching skills, but not impossible. I think Pacquiao is fast enough and strong enough to make Floyd extremely uncomfortable. To quote what I wrote in an article earlier today: I am in the minority here. I think Pacquiao will beat Floyd. While I can certainly foresee a scenario where Floyd outboxes Manny, I do not think it is likely. In order for Floyd to score a points victory against Pacquiao he is going to have to do something we have never seen him do inside the ring—he is going to have to fight! Not just overcome adversity, which is something he has arguably done in past contests with Jose Luis Castillo and Zab Judah, but he is going to have to fight hard with intensity in a fight that challenges his physical gifts to their fullest extent. Pacquiao is used to facing tough challenges. He has been challenging himself against the very best for six years strong. Floyd has not been taking on tough challenges, and this will be his downfall against Pacquiao. I like Pacquiao by late stoppage.
I've always thought Mayweather would beat him, and back when Pacquiao first started moving closer to Floyd's division(s), on the basis of the first Marquez fight i thought it would be a schooling to be honest. Now, although Mayweather is a much better boxer than Cotto, last night was the first time i was provoked into thinking Pacquiao has a real chance against Mayweather. That was the most complete performance i've seen from Pacquiao. That's not to jump on a bandwagon and call him a complete fighter though. At this time i still have to favour Floyd. How mad will it be though if they meet in round one and Pacquiao starts to land? Floyd's hardly been landed on in his career much. I just hope it happens so much.
Unless Pac can hurt Mayweather I don't see him outboxing him at all. And I think Mayweather has a very good chin, certainly above Hatton's (post Floyd) and Cotto's (post and even pre-Margarito really).
We got a glimpse of what the fight would look like when Cotto would occasionally fight on the back foot behind a jab. Mayweather lands his jab at will, and his right hand lead would find the target, just as Marquez's right hand often would land. What advantages do I see for Pacquiao? I think he punches harder, whereas Mayweather is big, equally as fast, and the much much more efficient defensive fighter. He barely took a shot against Marquez for christ sake. Mayweather wide UD...possible late stoppage.
I see Mayweather outboxing Pacquiao to a decision, possibly a stoppage if he can land sharp counters while Pacquiao is throwing flurries. That said, the Pacquiao from last night is going to be hell for anyone to fight. Those are all-time offensive capabilities we witnessed.
You haven't heard? Some feel that Pacquiao can beat Leonard at 147. If he beats Ray, he certainly beats Mayweather.
I can't see Floyd opening up too much in face of such an offensive talent, and based on how well Manny was able to take Cotto's shots, I don't think a few good counters here and there would be enough to deter Pacquiao. It's not out of the realm of possibility that PBF would be too focused on not getting hit against someone as fast, accurate, fluid, and powerful as Pac. I think Manny could potentially outwork him in such a scenario, of course it could go so many different ways. I still see this fight as virtually even - supreme defense vs supreme offense. It has to happen.
