Likes the look of it? Thinks it adds numbers to the PPV? Why does paying sanctioning fees signify that a fighter thinks a belt brings historical significance.

And even if Pacquiao does think that (personally I have no clue as to his motivations in this instance), why would that mean the rest of us have to as well?

Likes the look of it, haha doubt it. Thinks it addes PPV numbers, could be. :think It doesn't mean the fighter thinks a belt brings historical significance, it's an educated guess.

Nobody has to think that, but plenty of people do. But to say the title bout means nothing, is flat out incorrect.

Using the title to draw in PPV buys... Berto has a title you know, and is a far better matchup than Mosley.

That's an opinion what I gave, not a universally accepted fact. Hence not up to us.

Ask Pac that. Posters here don't speak for anyone but themselves.

Speculation. How do you think Berto would have looked vs. Floyd or against Mora at 154? 0-2 looking bad in both most likley. No one looks good vs. Mora except Forrest in one of the two fights.

Berto's biggest win to date was barely getting past Collazo.

Whether Berto is a better match up is a matter of opinion. IMO he has yet to do anything to demonstrate that he would be.

In PPV terms, I doubt a PPV fight with a title against a guy whose last fight but one was attended by 972 paying customers warrants comparison with a fight for a title against a guy whose last fight but one was purchased by 1.4 million pay per view customers....

We can get technical about it. But, it's unnecessary. The gripe is that Pac and/or his team has made weight a controversial topic of late. This latest move would not help their case. If they honor the division limits as stated, there would be no such criticism. I don't support their approach, as the only real justifiable weight provision, IMO, was the one made with ODLH (though that proved not so agreeable--physically--to ODLH). All the rest have been bull****, IMO. The controversy with Cotto's title and the C/W was particularly distasteful. Is it legal? Of course. Has it proven necessary? NO, not in my view. And it will not prove necessary here, either.

What agenda are you referring to? :think

Really...why do people like yourself even try to defend this ****? They have weigh limits for a reason. I'm sure you understand that. If Pac can't fight effectively at 154, he shouldn't limit another fighter from the benefits of not having to drain down 7 additional pounds. LMW is, essentially, already a C/W division. So, Pac wants a C/W inside of C/W just to compete in that division. :-(
We all know he is better than that...and we should expect more of him.

The controvery of those weren't that big to begin with. It was made a big deal by the die hard fans who aren't always rational.

The fight between Pac and Shane at 148 for a title or w/o the title fight is STILL the same fight. It's this "meaning" that everyone attaches to it.

All the more reason to not have so many catchweight fights nowadays, but the additional weight classes somehow justify the practice to some. I'm speaking in general, not necessary about the Pacman. Would a catchweight have been acceptable when Armstrong fought for the MW title? Sure, but a catchweight for a division's limit that is 7 pounds north is a bit of a stretch.

I do wonder though.. What type of champion does he think he is? Fighting for, and possibly defending, a belt at a catchweight(s) pounds below the limit?

Yes...Shane would weigh-in at 148 in either scenario. But, he should be able to weigh-in at any weight from 148 - 154, if HE chooses to. In this scenario, he would have to train as if he were preparing for a WW fight...not a LMW fight, where he could focus less on dropping weight.

Yes they have weight limits for a reason. That reason is and has never had anything to do with stopping two welterweight fighters agreeing to weigh in at 148 for a fight. And they have never had anything to do with allowing the greatest possible advantage to the bigger man.

The fight's at 147 from what I read so this is pointless.
