Pacquiaos recent opponents, Margarito, Clottey and Cotto, where do they stand in history? Im just wondering if years down the line when Pacquiaos youngest fans are old and remember the good ole days when we used to hang around street corners and listen to rappers talk about bitches and money, will anyone remember these fighters the same way people remember durans opponents? or even De La Hoyas opponents before Pac? I think Pacquiao will be more remembered for his wars with Morales, Marquez and berrera more than anything. Right now at this point it looks as though people are convinced he will be remembered as one of the greatest of all time, but will he really? :think ...actually, thinking about it now, same could be said for Floyd mayweather! In years time, will the same fans remember fighters like Baldomir and Judah? :think ... maybe we rate our fighters far too highly!!
Well it is too early to tell. Cotto after a couple more relevant wins can secure himself a HoF status. Not necessarily first ballot. Marg and Clottey? Probably not. Marg can do it but it would take 2-3 good wins (Martinez, Williams, and some one else good). Clottey has no chance unless he beat Marg, Martinez, Williams, Berto and a future 147er from the Fab Four of 140 (Bradley, Alexander, Khan and Maidana).
can somebody explain why this thread got almost completely ignored? could it be that neither sets of fans wanna say anything bad about their fighter? if i hadnt put that last bit in about the same applying to mayweather, we would have had a load of mayweather fans on here slagging off pacs resume. and if i had just said this about mayweather and not pac, vice versa!!!
A lot of champions who didn't go on to win multiple belts in different weight classes get forgotten. Pac is in the pantheon as is Floyd and DLH. The people who claim DLH lost all his big fights fall into the category of fans of the sport with short memories. Floyd's opposition will largely be forgotten except for some of his latest fights. Floyd NEEDS to fight Pac to secure his legacy. I think Pac is a sure thing as being a member of boxing's pantheon of greats but at least for me it's his fights with Morales/Barrera/Marquez that I'll remember him by. Not so much because they were important but because they were epic and part of a great era. Epic fights in great eras is what makes a legend.
By who? The hardcore fans? The nationalists? The general public and the sports community at large only started paying attention when Pacquiao fought De La Hoya. Pacquiao will be remembered for what he did to Hatton, Cotto, Margarito, and whatever he does next if it's anything impressive. Yeah, he'll be remembered as one of the greatest ever. That's already done.
Barrera, Morales and Marquez you will surely remember if youre a hardcore pacquiao fan, but a fan of boxing like stated above, will remember the GREAT pacman taking down Bigger Opponents; Dela Hoya, Cotto, Margarito.
I cant see Clottey doing much, Margaritto has a few good wins but will probably be remembered more for the hand wraps. Cotto could be a HOFer but will have to win a few more big fights i.e Martinez, Angulo, Chavez Jnr and even then he may have to rely on how well these guys do afterwards
Marquez will be remembered no doubt, and I think Cotto will be looked at as a very game fighter for his resume and style when years pass, especially by Puerto Rican fans. Hatton will have some sort of name in Britain. Margarito, Clottey, David Diaz, they will be known by boxing fans, but to more casual fans mostly as Pacquiao opponents (and perhaps for the fights with Cotto as well. The common opponents keep them in the loop.) The advantage of clear footage fights help boxing history stay alive due to being more accessible down the line.
Cotto - isn't even in the hall of fame Clottey - :rofl:rofl:rofl margarito - he makes the hall of shame
Good thread. Fifty years from now the names that will stand out on Pac's resume will be Barrera, Morales, Marquez, DLH and maybe Cotto and Hatton. For Floyd it will be DLH, Marquez and maybe Mosley and Hatton. Not saying its right, but thats what I reckon.
