Reading most of what's been written in the leadup, alot of people seem to think this will be the one thing Clottey can count on as an advantage. Directly speaking; I don't think Clottey is going to be able to get away with generically shelling up against this particular fighter. The "new" Manny Pacquiao seems to be able to thread hurtfully damaging punches under and around the guard from every conceivable angle. Clottey does a fine job of tucking his elbows, of course, and pressing his face all the way into his palms in mask.. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if this fight has much more give and take than most people are probably expecting at this point. When Clottey starts getting tagged up he'll go on the offensive. He's going to hit that little man as hard he can. Seems like a fair chance these guys are going to **** each other up. :thumbsup
Manny is getting through or around that guard. I hope Clottey's core is as strong as it looks because Pacquiao is going to work his body. Manny's work rate will open him up to be hit as the fight wears on.
Pac will break through and go around his guard. Whether Clottey wilts and the guard breaks open is another thing. Clottey will try to shut up shop for the whole fight.
That type of defense is best for Manny's style. The game plan is to use angles and wait for Clottey to punch. Throwing a massive abundance of punches will not do much to "Shell Defensive" fighters. However, Manny can win the fight on just out-punching him and never allowing Clottey to get on the offensive. Basically never stop punching. Have never seen a man do that but if Manny can, Clottey's defense will work against him.
Clottey is a lot bigger than a weight drained Oscar though.I don't think Pac will be able to get around him in the same manner.
He'll do it enough, but as long as he keeps the pressure on, Clottey will stay in that shell and he'll win rounds.
Good example. Williams couldn't really get through the shell defense but easily outworked Wright and made the best with every punch that did land on Winky.
I think Clottey is just a tad too slow to trap Pac in a firefight. Therefore he won't land much, and his punching power isn't significant enough to do a great amount of damage with only a few lands a round. So Clottey has to find somekind of strategic gameplan to land consistenly on Pac and wear him down otherwise he's ****ed. A good jab from Clottey would probably be more effective than a whole crap load of missed powerpunches.
