interesting post san rafael. the thing is, the full running lefty, if we may call it, while it carries more ooomph per punch, somehow exposes pac to counterpunchers. similar to what jmm does or what pbf did to knock out hatton.

the roach style punch though is more tighter and compact with defenses better built in after he throws his punches. so its just a matter of preference really and recklessness at some point. since pac has matured as a fighter and does not see the need to ko his opponent in 5 rounds or less, he sees to it that volume punching with accurate power shots (roach style) will do the trick rather than his slam bang approach, (high risk approach).

i think he has matured as a fighter and tried to lessen the wear and tear every times he fights.

Indeed, Pacquiao has to sacrifice his power to maintain the structural integrity of his offense in a very physical and literal sense by keeping things tight, front door and rear window. I will say however, that Manny should never stray too far from his running left - and really, the truth of it is that Manny never truly has. He did all his most genuinely effective work against Morales as well as Marquez with his bread and butter - so I'll disagree with you slightly there. Nobody can stop the left runner entirely. Nobody, it seems.

Manny is never going to be a pure boxer, he makes many mistakes still, but the wild running singles and combinations have now become tremendous game changers when he switches from "Roach mode" to "Killer Manny mode." The combination of the two styles has been complimentary as well as devastating because of his incredible explosiveness - Manny does get away with things virtually anyone else could not, and his athletic boxing manuevers, however flawed at times, now give him all sorts of positioning opportunities to unleash the black label stuff.

He's going to have a really rough time with Hatton because of all of this, of course. Making glaring tactical mistakes every 3 or 4 sequences in partnership with Manny's inability to come/launch forward (provided Hatton disallows that enough, which he should) is going to make it extremely difficult for Pacquiao to make Hatton respect his power - basically, because Manny won't be able to generate his power. Still, "Killer Manny" is more than ready to step in when that happens. Which he will, lucky for us, the boxing faithful.

no disagreements here. :good i actually agree that his best work against morales and jmm and even Mab came from that power left of his. the kd in the 3rd round of pac-jmm2 i think is more of a roach style, (tight angles with defenses built in.) see how pac raises his right to protect his head after delivering the kd punch. jmm was actually able to throw a counter left but was not able to connect since the power shot sent him to the canvas.

having said that, i think what makes pac unpredictable is his abitility to switch to both modes at will. a fighter facing pac will have second thoughts because they know pac has a knock out punch.

The most important thing that Freddie Roach has given Manny isnt the more polished boxing skills, or the in fight strategies, or the defensive techniques. I think the most important thing he taught Manny was stamina/endurance.

I swear that in nearly all of Manny's fights, pre-Freddie Roach, the main concerns of Filipino boxing fans whenever he fought a dangerous and seasoned opponent, was punch resistance and stamina.

We knew that he has the power to end the fight quickly, as long as he hits his opponent solidly, but he had to do it quick, because the longer the fight lasts, the more dangerous it is for him. More chances of getting hit, and since most of his fights ended quickly, we knew that he wouldnt sustain his power for 12 full rounds. There was the fear of him gassing and punching out in the deep rounds.

So it was brick shitting time everytime we the fans watched his fights. Too many variables for you to be certain that he wins easily. But the kid just had such a fighting heart that he will not let himself be beaten.
