The rope-a-dope is performed by a boxer assuming a protected stance, in Ali's classic pose, lying against the ropes, and allowing his opponent to hit him, in the hope that the opponent will become tired and make mistakes which the boxer can exploit in a counterattack. Manny Pacquiao briefly used this technique in his victory over Miguel Cotto to claim the unprecedented seventh world title in a seventh different weight division. In competitive situations other than boxing, rope-a-dope is used to describe strategies in which one party purposely puts itself in what appears to be a losing position, attempting thereby to become the eventual victor.
I did notice Pac doing this. He said he wanted to test Cotto's power and hence the stance. Also, it is a way for Cotto to abandon his boxing strategy and go for a brawl.
its definitely rope a dope.. ive seen pac do this in a lot of his sparring videos first ive seen him use it in a real fight.. and against the most dangerous body puncher in the ww division.. trully a great fighter
yup! got me screaming in front of my tv "wtf is he doing?!?". i thought he got injured or something coz he never done that before (if i remember correctly). he said in the post-fight that he was also testing the punching power of cotto. he also said he was hurt but pretending he was not. talk about mind game!
I noticed it for sure. The thing that was most impressive about it though was Pac's ability to turn his man when on the ropes, putting Cotto there instead. Ali was known for his ability to maneuvre very well, Pac hasn't been. Quality.
Exactly what I was thinking. Similar to the way Ali rolled with the punches on the ropes. Rumble in the jungle baby!
Pac vs. Oscar 7th round, he did that one too, then he banged his fist together and inflicted punishment. So it is not the first time.
:yep everyone I was watching with (including me) pretty much reacted the same way. It was so strange that Pac was just standing there with his guard up especially considering that whenever he would spin out and put Cotto against the ropes, he made it look so easy!
it's certainly a far cry from Pac's trade mark bouncing, jiggy body movements he normally does. You'd have to think it was a deliberate tactic to get Cotto to open up. Still strange seeing Manny doing it though, but I guess it's another skill Pac can add to his arsenal. Impressive.
You don't even wanna know the words I was yelling when he did that! SO bad I want to forget I yelled those words!
Cotto didnt take advantage though,he threw a combination then slowed down he shouldve went all out right there..
We did see glimpses of Pacquiao being able to go from cornered to being in a different corner of the ring in a flash when 24/7 showed clips of Pacquiao sparring Porter (it was the one where Pacquiao escaped the ropes although he lost his footing a little bit).
