rope-a-dope = slightly effective but dangerous strategy IMO

That was a dangerous move against Cotto. Just for Pac to think he can handle it is amazing.

Cotto is having second thoughts that Pac might counter him while Pac's back is on the ropes. I don't think he realized that Pac wanted him to feel comfortable opening up exactly as he did on the 2nd KD less than 15 seconds later.

rope a dope is for gutsy fighters and fast hands.....pac have them both.....when cotto took some breath..he immediately swing him around..and lunch his combos to cottos puzzlement...then when cotto try to counter punch and crouch forward...pac gave him the left uppercut...down he goes....thinking...." WTF happened? "

Well it took away the allegations that his weakness is getting hit in the torso.

Manny took some flush shots from a full welter in Cotto. I think its safe to say that body shots wont do it against Pac at this stage.

Pac better learn from the Jones-Green fight.

I am never really sold at Pac's chin. It is definitely nowhere the granite quality of Ali, Holyfield or Toney. Pac's chin is good but is not something that can afford to take an unseen powerpunch.

My point being that Pac should stay out of the ropes. Freddie Roach and Buboy keeps on telling him about this but he just keep doing it.

I didn't get the impression Pacquiao was doing it to make Cotto tired or to set him up for countering opportunities, for two distinct reasons: firstly, he only did it for a for a few seconds. Secondly, he didn't throw any punches while, or directly after, Cotto was throwing. I'm of the opinion that Pacquiao was telling the truth, and wanted to see what Cotto could hit him with. Cotto was already fairly tired by that point and had already taken quite a beating, so Pacquiao would know if he could open up on all-out offense or not. It's a good strategy - if a guy can't hurt you when you let him beat freely at your body, there's less of a chance he'll be able to hurt you in an exchange, so go for him. I'm sure he wouldn't have tried that in the first round when Cotto was fresh.

To see the genuine 'rope-a-dope', watch the Ali-Foreman fight again. From the second round through about the fifth round, Ali used the excessively slack ropes to lean his 6'4" frame way back, away and to either side of Foreman's huge, looping bombs. I'm not sure if you've ever tried swinging everything you have at air for an extended period of time, but it's a hell of a lot more tiring than actually hitting a bag or another fighter, because instead of relying on an object stopping your momentum, you have to expend energy to stop it yourself. After several rounds, it's obvious Big George was exhausted.

I wouldn't really compare the two instances. Pacquiao seemed to be testing Cotto to see if he could go on the offense with practical impunity. Ali used it against a massive puncher for several rounds, goading him into exhausting himself after feeling Foreman's power in the first round.
