Watching a few videos today online of people doing the pad routines. Not the normal pad work but the really quick tip tap stuff. Watching people like floyd and gamboa do this at first looks pretty impressive but it got me wondering how much of its just for show, it seems like the trainer is doing most of the work and kind of like a dance routine it can be learnt.I can see it helping hand eye coordination but not much else. Whats everyone's thoughts? Simmilarly they sometimes use the long thin pads almost like swimming floats, again it seems the same just a routine that can be choreographed. Im no boxing trainer so not saying its wrong or right. I know Spencer Fearon mentioned a trainer in london swearing by it, but is it all for the cameras?
On the quick tap stuff you mentioned, it's not so much the routine, it's about developing muscle memory. The idea being you catch a shot on the gloves or slip one and naturally you come straight back with a combination quickly and without thinking about it. Personally I like doing a bit of it alongside more traditional pad work, but I suppose it's each to their own when it comes to training. But you're right, it looks good for the cameras which is why that's what they always film.
i like about how the end of this clip with floyd and roger doing the padwork, roger says, dont be hating on me, i am the best mother farker... yes indeed, roger is the one doing most of the work in the pad routine.
the trainer spencer fearon is referring to is tunde ajayi. he is training his nephew Junior Saba who had close to zero amateur fights and is being promoted in the UK as the next big thing. they have a bunch videos on youtube under his page "stamina 4 sale" he has taken the mayweather routine to another level. another guy who is a mayweather pads nuthugger is barry robinson from million stylez boxing who took down his youtube page. i think at the end of the day, you can do the routine, but its not about the routine its about the individual to be able to execute it in the ring. mayweather is special. you can do the routine but it wont make you as good as money may
The old-time trainers laugh at these "pad games". It looks flashy but it doesn't help a boxer respond to actual punches and work on his execution against an opponent. When I used to train I found pad work was ok for speed but developed the wrong muscle-memory and bad habits, and was counterproductive as soon as I started sparring. Working on technique and strategy just from shadowboxing with a good trainer is way more beneficial than padwork. Despite Mayweather's impressive pad routine, I'm sure that's something he does more for media workouts than his real training.
Cheers guys. I guess like I thought its just for show. Still looks impressive and the cameras lap it up. Where as the more savvy know that this is just a game and the real training is being done behind the scenes
No way does Mayweather do that type of padwork leading up to a fight,it's all for show. I watched tunde do it with that young lad and got bored after 2mins
I'm convinced this is the same guy that said audley would come back in a time machine for the price fight, xXxOlympicxXx or something :rofl He's the only person I've ever heard use the word numbnut, and leaves post after post of nonsense. He's pretty funny
