I think it's a shame how witherspoons career turned out. It kind of reminds me of gooden and strawberry; he had all of the tools and talent for greatness but didn't fulfill his potential.
When Holmes was old in 1895, and Tyson was on the way up, who was the best heavyweight around? Witherpsoon beat quite a few ranked guys that Tyson eventually gave title shots to. I believe there is a good chance the loss to Smith was a pre-arranged deal.
What? Spoon didn't agree to go into that fiasco of a mess with Smith in 1986 to get KO'd and two teeth knocked from his mouth onto the ring apron........ Smith mugged a mentally disturbed Spoon in New York....... Yet the fight was on the level....... :rasta MR.BILL
Saying Tyson should of fought Spoon is stretching it way too far. Tyson was fighting and beating guys during that period (Holmes, Thomas etc.) that had beaten Spoon as well as fighting numerous opponents who were ranked higher. Not to mention the fact that Spoon was fighting nobodys during these years and barely getting wins against some of them. Tyson could of fought Spoon but there was hardly a time where Spoon was the logical opponent for him to face next.
Agreed............ Had Spoon been more so serious and trained in his win over Bruno in '86, and not such a slob in his KO loss to Smith to cap off the year, I think Spoon would've been a sensible Tyson opponent for 1987....... The KO loss to Smith in 1986 really ****ed-up Spoon's career and sales-man-ship to the public for a year or two................. Tyson didn't duck Spoon; Spoon ****ed up.......... rasta MR.BILL
Just seen it a day ago truly, neither guy really dominated, but Witherspoon hit with the more telling shots, and Page, being 239 and at war with Don King(which Witherspoon knew about), was unable to do what he did best, and Witherspoon took advantage.
