I think a lot of it is mental strength, which can be improved

You either got it or you don't. But if you don't, you can still counteract it with mental toughness. imo.

Example A.--External stimuli (body punch) not strong enough to generate 'pain': "That didn't hurt."
Example B.--External stimuli (body punch) causes intense pain: "I EAT THOSE!!!"

I've noticed my pain tolerance go up, but I don't know if it is mental or not.

doing muay thai and boxing could mess with your reflexes and the stance is differant, this girl i box with did muay thai and she always lifts up her knee by habit when shes getting swarmed.

there was a programme on bbc 2 last night (horizon) on pain. I didnt watch it all but it looked quite interesting , it was showing a family in tuscany that for some unknown reason all have some sort of pain immunity , the grandmother broke her ankle twice and never knew, one of the daughters cant feel cold the other heat and the kids have inherited it from the grandmother and cant feel broken bones.

You could probably get it on the bbc iplayer

    Yes. You can drink.

(And no I don't mean fight drunk. Drinking increases pain tolerance when sober.)
