Were there any fights going into the you found yourself almost uncomfortable to watch based on your concerns of how it would turn out ? Usually based on liking or following a guy and concerned about reality hitting ? Two that come to mind for me were the first Holyfield Tyson fight and Gatti Mayweather .. Going into the first Tyson fight I expected to see Holyfield get destroyed early. Many, myself included at the time still believed that Tyson existed on a completely different level and that Evander, Bowe and others only lived at the top in his ring absence .. needless to say it did nt play out that way and the fight was one of the most dramatic upsets I can remember watching live .. Gatti was so likable .. I knew he was going to get destroyed but could not even watch it .. I was right on that one ..
Both of yours are good choices.I re-watched Ali v Shavers three days ago[.I know its not strictly inside your criteria],but I found myslef not enjoying it because of what I knew happened to Ali later.
No real criteria .. just some fights I don't even want to watch out of concern for a guy I like ... I also felt that way about Fury Wilder going in ..
I won't watch a fight where somebody got killed or received life changing injuries, whether it is Carnera Schaff, or Benn McClellan. At that point it ceases to be entertainment. Louis Marciano is almost a metaphor for seeing your favorite fighter brutalized by a younger man, while well past his best.
Any fight that has a fighter end up brain damage or dead is always painful to watch. Benn vs McClellan, Mancini vs Kim, and most recently Gvozdyk vs Stevenson.
As far as thorough beating goes Ike Williams vs Beau Jack was pretty bad, especially the finishing combinations on poor Jack while the incompetent ref watches. Chavez brutally punishing Rosario for 11 rounds was also painful.
Jeffries vs Johnson - Jeffries was just a punching bag after a few first rounds. Not close to someone we see against Ruhlin.
Ali's last fights against Holmes and Berbick. Louis' last bout with Rocky too, seeing one of the greatest heavyweights of all time reduced to nothing. But Holmes-Ali tops the list for me, to see Ali like that was just heartbreaking.
Tyson Vs McBride was just plain painful. To see a once great fighter lose to someone on that level was hard to watch. Chavez vs Grover Wiley same thing. Seeing the usually Iron Chinned Holyfield stopped by fat former middleweight James Toney was also sad to watch. (It honestly makes me wonder if Holyfield was suffering ill effects from not taking his suspected enhancements. I am not saying that because I want him maligned or falsely accused. But, much like in Moorer I, and Bowe III, something seemed off with his conditioning. He just basically collapsed against Toney. )
I thought Chavez vs Rosario was actually an amazing fight. Rosario didn't just fold at the first sign of pressure. It was a magnificent battle for many rounds.
It was indeed a good fight, although a bit one sided. Rosario didn't want to quit but Chavez's body punching was really doing him in. Rosario looked like a mess by the time they stopped it.
Vitali vs Shannon Briggs was particularly brutal. That referee should have been fined and permantly suspended.
