Nothing wrong with amateurs Papp was a great amateur.
Now maybe I’m wrong but I thought this was a thread discussing a fight between Papp and Giardello for the professional middleweight championship of the world that didn’t happen.
However we know that Ral Hal Gooly Gooly repeatedly brings up Papp’s amateur wins to enhance his argument about Papp’s standing and prestige in the pro ranks.
His pro record is undeniably moderate, he struggled against British journeyman like Aldridge, Leahy and Scott and it’s reckoned he’d do a number on Giardello?
Now he may have caught Joey on one of his unmotivated bad nights, but if it was a tip top Giardello he’d box Papp’s head off.
There’s nothing on Papp’s pro resume to suggest all being equal he would have won that fight.

Yeah he did, Joey was not the most consistent of fighters, but when he was on he was focused he was an all time top fifteen imo.Papp doesnt make the top 25.

Mick Leahy was no journeyman Cecil. He'd been British Middleweight Champion.

Sorry pal I didn’t mean to run him down.
When I say journeyman I mean in top ten ranked terms, potential contenders for the world title.
I mean look at George Aldridge.
His fight with Papp was live on the BBC I remember watching it.
Now in the grand pantheon of British Middleweights Aldridge would be somewhere around the bottom end, yet it took Papp 15 rounds to dispose of him.
Aldridge had 3 more fights that year then retired, in 2 of them one by Leahy he was knocked out in the 1st round.
I recognise Papp’s achievements, but I just can’t see why people don’t recognise that his pro record is average.

@klompton2 what did you think of Terry Downs win over Giardello? I have only seen highlights myself.

I think its the best win of his career easily. Giardello was complimentary of him after the fight. He broke his hand in the third round but said that after the second round he told his corner he had nothing. He said he never got hit with so many left jabs in his entire life. He said if you took all of his fights and added up all the left jabs from all of them he still got hit more by Downes. He said Downes was a tough kid who would beat Robinson, win by DQ over Fullmer within two rounds, and probably beat Pender although he added that he had never fought Pender but that Pender didnt strike him as being as tough as Downes. Joey was a guy who makes it hard on us fans of his because he could look like the greatest fighter you ever saw one fight and look like a bum the next. The guy just hated training. If he had a better work ethic theres no telling what he would have accomplished. When he was motivated he was poetry in motion.

Leahy had won 2 of his last five fights, would have 3 more, lose them all and retire.

Still doesn't make him a journeyman Mac. Two of those defeats were Wally Swift and Nino Benvenuti.
