Basically having massive disagreement with my dad and grandad about boxing, they are both ex boxers and both very stubborn to say the least. Both give me alot of advice however they are becoming frustrated with the way in which i am training ie weights and sprints, as they belive in long runs bodyweight exercises etc. What shall i do and are they right.they also believe i should try and get down to 75kgs for next season.i walk around at around 13stone 4 now and my last two bouts have been at 78kgs.again are they right. i have had 8 bouts.if anyone can help i will appreciate it.

old school boxers, not all, but most...do not understand the benefits to proper weight training and cardio. But also, you aren't really giving enough information to make an informed reply are you. What are you doing for training? what do they suggest? What height are you for your weight? What body type? So many more questions...

    Kinda vague don't ya think?

You seem to train enough. 13.4 stone is what, 85kg? I don't see why you need to go to 75kg. You're tall enough for light heavy, and if it went well at that weight, I don't see why it should be a problem.

As for the weight you're at now, I honestly don't know if you can box at heavy. I'm the same height as you and I box at heavy, although I weigh more than you. It depends on your style and your strength, power and ability to deal with big guys. Also, in England you have an 86kg category in championships if you're a senior. That could be one for you if you don't make light heavy.

Ye its between 84 and 85kgs.i dont see why i have to either if im honest especially as im 18 and could continue to grow.Ive never boxed above 78kgs so i am not sure how it would go in all honesty.i think im too small for heavy i spar with a super heavy regualrly and get the better of him but i think this is due to superior technique and speed. Saying that i can really feel his power in his jab alone.I will mention that to my dad i think i could make 81kgs as when i wake up i am bang on 13 stone.is light heavy about 12 10 in lbs?Thank you for your advice it is much appreciated how long have u boxed and hav you always bein heavyweight

I was about 86kg and above from when I was 15. Been around the gym for around 5 years on and off. Trained solidly and competed a bit for about three and a half. I'm no expert mate, just saying my little bit of experience. At 18 and 6'4 you have the potential to develop into a heavyweight, depending on your frame. You'll start getting your man strength and filling out like mad.

We haven't seen you so its hard to tell what weight you can make. I think you can make 81 if your around 84. You can easily drop the 3kg from a bit of sweating and some lighter meals before the match anyway. I don't see why you can't box light heavy, and then do 75 if you really have to and your coaches think you should for championships. You cant keep the weight down all season unless your overweight, and if you train a lot and eat reasonably you shouldn't be.

My personal opinion is I'd rather train really hard, eat healthy and just box at whatever weight I'm at, unless its just a couple of kilos I have to drop. On the other hand, your coaches actually know you and probably know a lot more about boxing so.. .

ye i think thats a good point my coach always says for club shows you are what you are aslong as your not fat and we will match you from there.for championships they are alot stricter and try and get you too as light as you can without bein drainer but obviously this is a delicate process.

    Ooops

That's not too bad for light heavy either actually. Plenty of guys that height, although lots of middles that height as well.

I was the same as I am now - 6'0. I was one of those wierdos who got to maximum size really early and was shaving every day etc. Am now much stronger but I was always a stocky guy.
