This makes no sense to me. It is not like Ruiz just has bad genetics. He can move his hands well and shows some real fast twitch muscle recruitment plus he trains at a tight camp at altitude in Big Bear. Perhaps it really is the simple answer He may just be lazy or have some mental block when it comes to pushing himself; as most have suggested. Too damn bad because the guy has talent.
They have said multiple times that he lost ~15kg during camp - which if you believe then he gained 18kg in the time between his fight in September (where he weighed in at 114kg) until he started camp at Big Bear in late October.
Has to be genetics to some degree. The guy must have to train a lot, and most people, even eating a lot of junk, are not going to end up being as fat as he gets. Being explosive athletically is kind of unrelated to his natural body shape and metabolism I think.
Go to any gym - boxing or otherwise - and you will see people of all shapes and sizes, and the ones who have worked longest and hardest aren't always the body beautifuls. Nature is not that kind or predictable.
Ruiz comes in at his normal weight and Parker a career high and it's some how advantage Parker? It doesn't make sense to me, I know Samoan's have big builds but they love to eat and even Tua was at his best around 225lbs. Joe is more likely to struggle with the weight because Ruiz is used to it. Parker is meant to be a big trainer and dedicated why tf does he want to weigh that much? Is he planning on having a short night?
Parker is 2kg heavier than he was against Dimitrenko, hardly going to be a massive shock... he had gained 3kg from his "normal" weight for that fight and Dimitrenko is arguably Parker's most convincing performance. He has been doing a lot of new conditioning work this year and the weight is coming largely from muscle mass increase. They had a thorough camp and sound happy with where he's at, I'm guessing they know what they're doing. I'd call Tua's fight with Ike Ibeabuchi as a career highlight - both Ibeabuchi and Tua broke records for punches thrown in a HW match and it was an all out war, Tua's BMI at that point was >33. Parker is still <30 for this fight, comparatively lean but he is clearly carrying a lot of muscle.
I don't think Ruiz would ever be fit looking. It isn't a body building comp and its how conditioned he is under the fat which will determine how he goes.. Having fat just means you eat more than you burn, doesn't mean you eat junk (although junk generally makes the job easier).. Parker looked to have a little extra around the middle tbh..
It might not matter for this fight but he does look too heavy which is only going to slow him up and sap energy. 247lbs is way too heavy for him and Dimitrenko was a sandbag that didn't come to fight. JP is 5kgs too heavy I reckon and I hope Andy doesn't take him to deep water with all those muscles.
He is closer to 3 kg heavier than he was for Dimitrenko. But the difference is he looks a bit soft this time around.
