Only if the fat guy is allowed to fight at his pace. We've seen it time and again with these overweight heavyweights. They can comfortably go 12 rounds but when pushed to fight at a pace they are not accustomed too they don't have that cardio capacity to fight at lactate threshold for sustained periods like their better conditioned, leaner opponents. Arreola vs Stiverne 2 and Stiverne himself was far from lean, Fury vs Usyk, Miller vs Dubois.

Plenty of obese guys have the endurance to finish a marathon, the world record for the heavyweight person to finish a marathon is over 400lbs, but ask that guy to complete that marathon under 7 hours (which is still slow for a marathon) and you'll see where they are lacking in terms of cardio. It's the same in boxing ask a guy 20-40lbs over optimal weight to fight at a high pace and you'll see their stamina exposed and it's not just for excess body fat, muscle has a higher oxygen demand than fat, like when Joshua used to come in too heavy and would gas out for periods during fights.

This idea that being overweight doesn't come at a cost in terms of stamina is simply false. Can they still go 12 rounds at a fairly good pace, of course but when asked to fight above a comfortable pace just for a few rounds and suddenly the wheels will come off.

I'm interested in seeing more of this heavier version of Parker after yesterday. Bakole clearly doesn't have the punch resistance I thought he had (regardless of the circumstances), but maybe Parker does hit quite a bit harder now. Still looked fast and explosive at 267 lbs.

Hopefully we still see the Dubois fight.

Dubois would destroy anybody weighing 315lbs, Bakole looked awful in there.

Cormier was more of a wrestler than a striker, added weight can give you more strength which is vital when wrestling in the UFC, trust Cornier couldn`t have finished Bakole like that.

Didn't Miller weigh something like that? It took Dubois a while to get rid of him. Right?

333 pounds. Obviously take MA's point but it is hilarious that it was only 3 fights ago that DD didn't destroy someone weighing over 315 pounds lol.

Miller would have taken that shot from Parker, he started far better than Bakole did v Parker, plus Miller had been training to fight Dubois, Bakole dodgy corner told him to slowly build his way into the fight after the first round because he had no sparring.

Weight does not give you power, punchers are born. It may add strength but not power.
Power in boxing is known to be something you’re born with. Explosiveness, speed, technique etc all create power.

the hardest hitters in history were not as heavy as the guys today.

You don’t lift weights to become a puncher.

Being overweight doesn't affect your speed and explosiveness (which you either have or don't have) but it certainly affects your stamina. Ruiz still has fast hands whatever his weight, and Sanders was the same. At least in the early portions of a fight.

Zhang is one of the hardest punchers in history. I suppose you're gonna say someone like Shavers or Maciano hit harder. :buenrollo:

You need to be sharp to punch hard, Bakole looked fat and clumsy in there.

Shavers could have punched Zhang`s body harder than Agit did, his body mecanics when punching gave him as much power as anyone within reason, Zhang is very heavy handed though.

I'm genuinely curious, who are some examples of punchers like you mean, or boxers who have "power"?

Also what do you consider boxers like Joyce and Zhang to have?

Joyce doesn`t punch anywhere near as hard as Zhang.

Punchers- as mentioned, people like shavers & Marciano or others like Tyson, foreman, wilder, or lower weights like Julian Jackson, Naz, tito etc. loads.

Zhang is a heavy hitter, but increasing weight won’t improve that.

Also, Zhang isn’t the biggest punchers we’ve seen and when the punchers of the past have put weight on, it didn’t increase power.

this is not a new concept.
Sorry if this is patronizing but most people on here are clueless about boxing and just passionate casuals.
I’ve never heard a traditional coach say adding weight adds power (not these boxercise coaches). It is not a science. if adding weight was all it took, so many would do it.

it’s an old saying in boxing “punchers are born, not made”. Meaning, it’s a natural gift, not something you can tune by “putting weight on” for example

Actually you will see guys like benavidez etc do not carry their power up in classes as increasing their weight didn’t increase their power. However the opponents are bigger and often resist the power better.
