I have read a great deal about proposed heavyweight unification fights between Joshua and Wilder or Parker and really don’t understand why so many people expect Joshua to act like a charity and help those less successful than himself. People have said the offer is lower than a mandatory opponents purse. Well that’s because unification fights are not mandatory there is no way of forcing any champion to give up a high proportion of total purse in these situations. I keep reading Joshua needs to make concessions if he wants to gain other titles. If you use this logic then surely Wilder or Parker should make even greater concessions in negotiations as they will gain twice as many titles than they are risking should they fight and beat Joshua. If Joshua took the deals that are being proposed, 50-50 for Wilder or 60-40 for Parker he would probably end up taking a pay cut for what will apparently be the biggest fight of his career. So, the anti-Joshua mob want him to risk twice as much as his opponent whilst not increasing his purse and giving his opponent a payday approximately 10-15 times higher than they have ever received before. How could Joshua possibly say no to such a tempting deal?
he'd get a cheap bit of plastic if he did which there is 4 of.. wait doesn't the WBA have 3 for themselves?!totally worth it!
It's a shame that greed has to get in the way of a good fight. The fighters will make millions regardless. They need to park their egos and remember where they came from. They have become totally detached from reality.
People see past unification fights and see what was offered and think they deserve the same. Tyson gave Tucker and Smith at least 60/40 splits, Wlad gave 50/50 splits to Haye and Ibraghimov and Lewis/Holyfield was 50/50. But the circumstances were very different. Tyson was only making a couple of million per fight at that stage, Wlad hadn't got his deal with RTL with Ibragimov and was not making much, Haye was a huge draw making $9 mill for the fight before Wlad and Lewis was a pretty big draw too and making very similar money to Evander for routine defences. Joshua dwarfs both Parker and Wilder as draws now. Giving them similar splits now would be like a come back Tyson giving Bruno and Seldon 50/50 and 60/40 when he fought them for their belts. Which is clearly nuts.
Parker deserves more than a mandatory. But he cant expect to go from 1mil to 7mil if AJ has to take a paycut. They know AJ is their lottery ticket but they should be less concerned about how much AJ is making and percentages and more about what they can potentially make. Wilder is different as he can potentially bring US PPV which they both need each other to do so i 60/40-65/35 would be reasonable.
It's their career, it's up to them but you never know what the future holds. The Joshua payday might not always be there for them. If it were me I would accept about £5m or whatever the equivalent % is.
I say this as a fan of Joshua, Wilder and Parker... At the end of the day I'm a FAN. I'm not a boxing promoter, manager, etc. Which mean I don't care about how many fans a boxer has, I don't have many social media followers a fighter have. I'm a fan. After all I'm not going to get any of the profit. As a fan all I care about are the best fighting the best. As a fan I want to see unification fights. If that means Joshua has to give up some of his profits I don't care. Just make the fight. Likewise if that mean Wilder and Parker have to take a 80/20 split I don't care make the fight. I'm a boxing FAN. I'm not a promoter. I'm not overly concerned about how popular a fighter is. I just want to see the best guys fighting. This is one of the things that hurt boxing and give it a WWE feel. In the WWE your success is largely based on your popularity as opposed to how good you are. In the NBA nobody cares that the Lakers and Knicks are the most popular teams. If they suck like they have for several years now they aren't going to win games or be given a championship. That's the same for almost every other sport as well. In tennis Rafael Nadal may not be as popular as Roger Federer but he can compete in every event Federer can and be allowed to finish the year number 1 which he just did. In short OP you are looking at it through a promoters point of view. There is no problem with that. In fact you maybe a promoter yourself. Eddie Hearn is that you? The problem is most people that post online are fans. And most fans don't care about the promoter stuff.
This situation is what happens when you massively overpay one fighter to step into the ring with you (buying the belt). Then the rest expect to get massively overpaid as well. That's why I always disagree with people that say "just pay the man!" in situations in which the opponent tries to cash out for a belt. Because once you do, the next one always expects you to overpay him too.
I understand where you are coming from - and in the end some reasonable balance will hopefully be negotiated. But as someone else mentioned in another thread ... who else is he going to fight? Miller - Pulev - Ortiz (after March) - Povetkin - Whyte ? If Joshua really is the real deal he should be pretty confident against Wilder and probably also Parker. Once he holds all the cards he can call all the shots. On this forum and elsewhere, people are writing/saying (right or wrong) that Wilder is the WBC champ and he can beat Joshua. That's going to hang in the air until it's proven otherwise. There's also the chance Joshua will fight someone without a belt and get caught with a punch or gas out in the late rounds - lose his belt and his zero. IMO the Wilder and Parker fights are a bird in the hand right at the moment.
Anthony Joshua is like the Money Mayweather of the heavyweight division, in terms of paydays for opponents. Imo. now everyone will say "they want to fight Joshua and they got it what takes to beat him" ...when really they just want the payday that comes with fighting him. similar how to Danny Garcia & Amir Khan say they want to fight Mayweather and they say they can beat him but deep down, they're only taking the fight for the money and will most likely lose.
It's sad that Joshua's fans don't want to see Joshua fight Parker or Wilder. It's sad they his fans are ok with Hearn possibly lowballing both guys because Hearn doesn't know their worth and how to apply it to future purses. I hope Parker gets the fight doe and that he knocks the stiff PED coward out.
