is parkinsons disease a strong enough case to have more protection such as a head guard in professional boxing? maybe even a case to ban boxing as a sport? (awaits flaming)

ali got it through boxing, so has freddie roach, there is no cure for it, an boxing being a brutal sport, would only be made better by playing it safe rather than exposoing the brain so badly to incurable disease?

whilst a head guard cant protect you against parkinsons, it surely is another layer of protection?

maybe professional fights should have a percentage of money going to the parkinsons society or other organisations committed to research into finding a cure?

just a thought, having watched the freddie roach doc somebody else posted...

AFAIK there is as yet no definite causal link established between head trauma and Parkinson's.

firstly boxers choose the sport not the other way around so they are fully aware of the risks, having said this i believe head gear will take the excitement of the sport away possible solutions are bigger gloves i.e less likely to cause damage to a boxer but again this will lead to less knockdowns/knock outs and less excitement. I think a realistic solution to the problem would be mantatory check ups and scanning boxers heads for signs of wear and tear and ban them from boxing if they are at risk of damaging their health, having said this i do believe it is difficult from a medical perspective to be able to tell if an individual is likely to get parkinsons in the future and i believe if boxing invests in parkinson research this can be achieved.

I belive there are 2 types of Parkinsons. One is Parkinsons Disease the other is Parkinsons Syndrome. Syndrome being caused by repeated head trauma
Head gear just means that a fighter can take heavier shots for longer - the brain is still getting bashed around and over time the effects will still add up. Ali and Roach are unfortunate cases a reason y no fighter should ever be labled a bum - but many other fighters retire an function as normal -knowing when to call it a day is a massive factor. For health reasons it would be good if there was a unified boxing commision to over see the health and well being of fighters in and out of the ring

bigger gloves will lead to MORE parkinsons. Repeated hits to the head are much worse than a one shot KO. IMO they should have lighter gloves, 8 oz for middle heavy, 6 oz for everything south of welter.

IMO Roache's and Ali's parkinson's is just a political way of saying dementia pugilistica. Boxers are not physicians and if head gear "really" helps then they should be forced to wear them.

dude iv studied physics at degree levels bigger gloves mean more sponge in the the gloves this increases the impact time hence increases the impulse, this essentially means the force of the impact is reduced. quantity of the shots are irrelevent its all about the impact of the punches.

a more common example is airbags in cars they reduce the force of an impact. if what your saying is right then why not fight bare knuckle and get the fights over and done with? the lighter the gloves the more damage done to a fighter this is a fact and you would also see more fatalities in the ring. giving a 6oz glove to someone like prince naseem would be stupid one punch to the temple and he can actually kill someone

As the Head gear absorbs sweat it gets heavier and will begin making the punches seem harder in a 10-12 round fight.....That heavy head guard will throw that head around something fierce makes the punches have more snap to them round 9 of sweating in it jaring punches, blocks vision aswell

Ali fought 16-18 round fights he had more wear then fighters now a days

Fighters develope issues from sparring more so the actual fight....But this is not the case with ali in my opinion but the case for 65% of fighters that get it......Shane Mosely scares me He takes to many hits he is a fighter to look at from the fight.....James Toney is a fighter to look at from sparring

You're pretty much wrong here and it's nothing to do with physics. Bare knuckle boxing took place for 150 years in Britain with only two fatalities. Full blooded shots to the head were very uncommon in these fights for the very simple reason that hitting someone in the head with full power with a bare fist is reasonably likely to damage your hand.

there are plenty of dangers in alot of jobs...these guys make MILLIONS and have led good lives...they will not BAN or use headgears in boxing ever...the fighters choose this and 99% end up fine

the more padding you have on your glove the harder your gonna punch because its more protectection that spounge effect is jarring....
Bare knuckle will Fracture Eye knock teeth out and ko people
but i hit harder with bigger gloves then smaller gloves I dont like to hurt my hands

sugar ray robinson, ali, roach, benitez and many others... its a fact of the sport sadly.
but using heavier gloves makes things worse.

That's because Ali never learnt the basics of defence. He relied on his foot speed and once that went, he took repeated punches from the likes of Frazier and Foreman left, right and centre.

Boxing will NEVER be banned. It generates way too much revenue.

No, boxing is dangerous. would you like to ban football as well considering all the head injuries that have been shown to affect guys well after they're done playing?

If anything we need stronger commishions that would prevent guys that are well past it from fighting.
