In regards to Ali the media will often say he "just" has parkinsons and that he is "sharp". However those who know about parkinsons understand that it does effect one mentally, espically as it progresses. Besides that, one could have other forms of damage as well. One must also ask about someone like Roach, because Parkinsons can effect your higher coginative functions (many historians believe that Hitler became a far worse military leader as time went on due to the mental effects of parkinson). And you have to ask if that could damage his ability to plan for fights.

basically how much actual mental imparement comes from the parkinson.

Many Parkinson's disease or syndrome sufferers do indeed have difficulty with their speech as the illness progresses, but in order to prove that they still have a sharp mind, I say have the affected folks write a page or two on a piece of paper or with a word process device pertaining to a specific topic, and see if they can follow along. If they truly can, well great.. And if not, well, there is the evidence that they are not sharp and are in fact becoming zombie's...

As long as guys like "Ali & Roach" can still take a ****, crap, tie shoes and feed themselves without a nurse or aide, I saw they are okay and doing as well as expected...
    :yep
When a guy need a bed pan and a nurse to wipe his ass and change his Pampers, well, its time to get your ass in the box and prepare yourself for planting... I'm sorry, but the truth can be painful...

I think Ali was in his early stages of Parks syndrome as far back as 1978 with his fights against Leon Spinks. For a heavyweight who was as great as Ali was, being slowed and faded with slurring speech at age 36 seems odd to me... 36 ain't all that old, and Ali did work hard for the rematch with Spinks by weighing 221 solid pounds... Still, Ali had no power and his strength was merely average against the 201 pound Spinks... WORD!

I first noticed that something was up with Muhammad's voice back in 1979. In between the second Spinks, and Holmes fights.

They dont have Parkinson's, they have pugilistic dimentia. They say they have Parkinson's because they are having the same type of deterioration, but its a different disease caused by brain trauma.

By the time Ali was filming "Freedom Road" in '79 it was clear to me he was past his best days in the ring and films were better suited for him...

Ali's speech was horrid when he did them 'Decon' bug spry commercials... "Kills Bugs Fast."

If any single event pushed him over the edge, rather than sheer accumulation of blows, I've often suspected Shavers was the culprit. He took flashing right hand after flashing right hand, saw more stars that night than the Milky Way could hold, and reportedly recalled only enough of it to say with certainty that Earnie was the hardest puncher he was ever hit by. His timing and coordination never looked right after Shavers.

As for that loss of strength and power, I think the damage Inoki did to his legs in Tokyo is a source of at least some of that. He stopped nobody after Inoki, and I don't see Evangelista lasting the championship distance with the Ali of the Dunn fight.

I'm close to working on mine.

As far as the Parkinson's thing, It can certainly affect your career. I personally think developing Parkinson's has had an effect on Roach as of late. His dick statements in the media, some of them delusional(JCC Jr. could beat Martinez right now) are a great example. Dementia can sometimes develop from the syndrome causing a lot of personality changes. Here's a quick read:

Who ever coined that horrible phrase 'punch drunk'.

And the morons, who put small children in the boxing ring, while their brain is
    still developing.

for the purposes of this topic DP is essentially the same as Parkinson's though; he was referring to the symptoms of Parkinsonism stemming from DP. No need to nitpick, you're not a doctor .

The people who didn't understand the symptoms of CTE based dementia? Punch drunk is a phrase from earlier times. What would you have called it?

Anyway brain development does not end when you reach double digits...the greatest changes to the parts of the brain that are responsible for functions such as self-control, judgment, emotions, and organization occur between puberty and adulthood. The brain is a constantly changing organ. The funny thing is.... truly great boxers begin early as amateurs, certainly when they are children.... If we restrict kids from boxing early on, are we ruining the quality of fighters?
