Great fight. This should be for The Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight Title. These are two of the best fighters at LHW.
Pascal has beaten two opponents at LHW. Branco, who customarily loses when he steps up to world level, and Diaconu, whose best win is against Chris Henry. Explain why Pascal should be ranked higher than Tarver, Johnson and Hopkins.
Well, if you want to play the who beat who game. Branco beat Glen Johnson so by your theory Pascal should be ahead of Johnson just because of that, and Tarver hasn't beaten anybody in almost two years. Pascal probably hasn't done enough to pass up Hopkins, but he would be number 3 and based on The Ring's rating system 1 vs 3= Ring Title fight. So, that is why Dawson-Pascal should be fighting for The Ring Title.
I love the way people are saying these are the two best fighters at LHW yet Froch gets lambasted on these forums despite BEATING a LHW as a SMW! Sheeeesh rant over get back to your threads peeps :bbb
Psst! Usually, when a boxer has trouble to make weigh, that's a good thing for his opponent. Froch didn't win against a LHW, he won against a dehydrated SMW. See the difference?
Johnson against Branco was ten years ago, I take it you overlooked this? Either that or you're trying to make an unbelievably stupid argument. Tarver hasn't beaten anyone in almost two years, but that last win was against Clinton Woods, who was still better than anyone that Pascal has beaten. I like Pascal a lot, but premature ranking of fighters based on slim evidence is one of my pet hates. Pascal has done nothing as yet to earn a top three ranking at LHW. When you actually look at it, there's no real reason to rank him higher than Cloud. Btw, your statement that "based on The Ring's rating system 1 vs 3= Ring Title fight" is incorrect also. 1 vs 2 = ring title fight. 1 vs 3 can be sanctioned for a title fight in certain circumstances. Based on previous precedent those circumstances are limited to when it is considered that the number one fighter is fairly clear and the 2 and 3 in the rankings are pretty much even (eg. Calzaghe v Lacy was sanctioned for the Ring belt as Lacy and Kessler were considered even at that time, Margarito v Mosley wasn't as the number three (Mosley) had lost to the number two (Cotto) in his previous fight at WW). The only departure from that has been the ridiculous decision to sanction Wladimir Klitschko v Chagaev for the Ring belt. However, as that was a unilateral decision taken by the magazine editor after lobbying from the Klit camp, and never referred to the rankings panel, that is best viewed as an aberration.
