some of the threads on here have got me remembering boxers i use to follow back in the late 80's / early 90's. anyone know where pat barrett is these days ? i remember when he won the european title against a boxer who's name escapes me...but he beat him easy in a few rounds and the italian was out for nearly 10 minutes or something....when barrett landed he landed...he had some power. at times he would remind you of nigel benn the way he went about his business i heard of him being sent to jail for a wee while and coming out and being part of robin reids training camp a few years back, and micheal jennings i think, but havent heard any more about him. people talk about herol graham being the best british boxer never to win a world title...but this guy was another one i think.
Good post doug...I'm no conspiracy theorist but after reading the link there is more than a hint that Pat was set-up http://www.oldhamadvertiser.co.uk/news/s/465918_barrett_jailed_after_gun_found_in_hotel_room
No disrespect to Pat but I doubt he was set up. The guy is known as very deep and connected in Manchester. He was running with Hillbillies from way back.
I used to watch Pats big fights, he beat a guy from Denmark called Racheed Lawal to get to a title shot.. Lawal was later stabbed to death in his native Denmark.. and on the same night Henry Akinwande boxed Gypsy John Fury knocking John out in 3.. look at his son now (Tyson Fury).. A few months later at the old G-Mex Pat fought for the WBO world title and lost on points to Manning Galloway an awkward American ... while Derrick Angol also lost in a title fight for the WBO Cruiserweight title against Tyrone Booze.. guys on those cards were Del Waul, Denzil Browne, Johnny Melfah, Darren Westover, Adam Fogerty, Duff and Lawless brought a few good shows to Manchester back then..
I always thought that Manning Galloway was an Aussie?? There used to be some great shows back in Manchester in the 80's...:good
Manning Galloway was a southpaw runner from Columbus Ohio, who lost his WBO title in around his second defence against Bo Jacobson... He later came and lost in the same arena to Eamon Logheran....... In fact Eamonn was decent and held a solid win over an old friend of mine Donovan Boucher from Canada..
loughran was good alright....after he lost his title to lopez i fully expected him to return...but he never did.....it was his only proper loss that.....he was only 25.
The show with Akinwande and Fury , and Barrett v Lawal.. and the Galloway v Barrett show were both Duff , Lawless shows at the G-Mex... I was involved with both.. Barrett, Akinwande, Del Waul , were at the time Duff boxers... Thankyou..x
