Never understood how Sanchez found him as competitive a fight as he did until I saw a little more of Cowdell.Turns out he was a pretty good boxer.Sharp,consistent and aggressive jabber,a good counter-puncher and good upper-body movement.The economical punch output and limited openings that the elusive Cowdell gave really frustrated the **** out of Sanchez,even if the fight was scored a little closer than it should have been.
Cowdell was one of the best British amatuers of the '70s.A really excellent/borderline great amatuer. His style was better suited to the amatuers though, as he was all about technique and didn't have a lot of physical ability or power.Also, like Chris finnegan he turned pro quite late and didn't have a long prime physically. I slightly prefer him to Jim Watt, who at quick glance did better with similar strengths and weaknesses.Very good jab, clever busy feints and counterpunching, with good glove defence and gave a lot of crafty defensive angles.However without strong reflexes, he did leave himself open for uppercuts against quicker fighters when he leaned in low with gloves cupped at both sides of his head like zapata or Pea. All in all the kind of semi-obscure contender who will potentially give most featherweights looking to fight a methodical technical, or cute outside bout a tough night.Fighters like Villasana etc and those just looking to pressure and overwhelm that have good athleticism would usually have his number.
